Name – Ray Brahms
Title – Splinter Fang (generally goes by this name)
Alignment – Neutral Good.
Race – Lycanthrope. Specifically, a type of werewolf who have deliberately been infected by other werewolves and has retained his or her humanity and self control after the initial transformation process. Lycanthropes also possess the unique trait of being able to switch between human and werewolf form at will, though they cannot turn into a body of a natural wild wolf like other wolf-men variants can. When in werewolf form, these creatures tend to grow 2-3 feet taller than their human form and vastly increase in weight and muscle mass. They are affected by an instinctual drive to hunt warm blooded prey in the forest including livestock, wild animals, and to some extent even human beings. Failure to do so for several days while remaining in this form (such as so-called “vegetarian” werewolves) will result in extreme physical pain for the werewolf in question and uncontrollable violent tendencies soon afterward. In either human or werewolf form, their lifespan extends to about 150 years on average.
Outside from their intimidating appearance and hunter instincts, Lycanthropes are rational beings who have the ability to speak and reason like their former human self. There are many weaker willed members who have lost their human side over time and are viewed as mindless killing machines by society. They tend to join packs of other werewolves in the wilderness for protection. Particularly violent individuals have given a negative reputation to the race as a whole, and are often attacked on sight by heavily armored knights and magically enhanced werewolf killers. The “more civilized” variety tend to be private, reclusive types who are often employed as mercenaries or private guards for rich businessmen and mages.
Gender – Male.
Age – 35 years old in human years.
Appearance –
Fang is 480 pounds and 8 feet of fur, muscle and bone. His huge hulking demeanor makes him appear almost bear-like, but his long pointed snout, jagged ears and bushy tail are distinctly that of a wolf. His back is permanently hunched forward, forcing his massive shoulders directly behind his neck. His body is covered with a thick pelt of ashy black fur which is warm to the touch. His eyes are bright yellow with black slits for pupils. When he walks, his body moves in a hulkish demeanor, naturally rotating his arms from front to back with every stride. When running on all fours, his head is thrust upwards and his back is flat. His low, bent legs and constantly drooping arms gives the appearance of a creature poised for a pounce even when he is merely taking a stroll outside.
Attire – Does not wear any clothing whatsoever. Fang considers it an unnecessary inconvenience that is serves no purpose since his fur is perfectly capable of keeping him warm.
Armour – Does not wear any armor. However, his skin is nearly as tough as steel mail, and he can brush off most light cuts and blunt strikes with ease.
Personality – Fang tries to be business casual when possible, though this is difficult due to his noticeable presence. He is calm and reserved outside of battle and is nearly impossible to provoke into an attack. He naturally distrusts his instinctual nature and meditates for at least an hour each day in an attempt to keep this "beast mentality" under control. Conversation with him is often frank and polite, and he consciously forces his voice to sound as human like as possible. He regularly avoids physical contact with strangers. You can agitate him fairly quickly by stepping or pulling on his tail due to the sudden stinging and lack of balance this causes. When he needs to cool off, instead of fighting he will take a quick run through the forest. He is also unwilling to discuss the possibility of reverting back to human form with anyone but his closest associates. It has been at least six months since his last transformation, which would the transformation back a difficult and painful one. So far, this ability is not on his agenda.
As a Lycanthrope he is proud of both his human and werewolf heritage and tries to live both aspects of this life to the fullest. In human society he enjoys reading philosophy, big game hunting, and hanging out with younger villagers at a local tavern. Sometimes he lends his great strength to voluntarily help members in the community, such as with constructing buildings or moving heavy harvesting equipment. He is always willing to defend himself against any false accusations of murder or theft, which despite his best efforts still come about once every few months from paranoid traders or housewives. When he chooses live in the wild he has been known to spend weeks on end hdunting with packs of wolves in the snowy wilderness, training his hunting skills to the fullest and familiarizing himself with every aspect of the natural world. He has gathered an extensive knowledge of the surrounding forests and maintains a network of contacts with spiritualistic cultists and magical creatures who are normally antagonistic towards human adventurers.
In battle Fang is menacing, vicious, and completely unrelenting in his drive to turn his opponents into a pulpy mess. If he is charged with removing a bandit camp, he will happily wipe out any humans in it's vicinity- men, women, and children alike. He uses these attacks as a free for all buffet, though he is never willing to actually infect other humans with his Lycanthropic disease. While some more chivalrous warriors would consider such behavior barbaric, his employers look on him as reliable and efficient and are more than willing to pay their way out of any “collateral damage” his actions might cause.
First Impression – If you saw him for the first time casually sitting at a bar, you would probably have a heart attack. Hence he tends to wait until night before getting a drink, as the unwanted attention he gets from elderly non-locals has caused quite a large list of medical bills for shock and sudden fainting billed directly to his estate. If you manage to get past his intimidating appearance, you would probably find his gruff, sociable nature easy to relate to, and after a few drinks you could be sharing stories like old friends. He is long since used to human visitors being uncomfortable or suspicious in his presence and tends to travel with multiple companions in an attempt to calm the atmosphere. If you are mentally prepared for meeting him, your first impression would probably not be too unpleasant.
Unless of course he is bent on attacking you, in which case he will do his best to make sure you either don't get a chance for a first impression or are continuously scared out of your mind.
Strength – Fang's charge attack is like slamming into a brick wall at 40 mph, except backed up by some razor sharp claws. The average unarmored human is going to be severely injured or killed on contact. He can turn your commonplace zombie minion into a splotch of bloody paste with one well-aimed swipe. Using all four legs he is capable of tossing boulders nearly twice his body weight, and he can lift most humans one-handed with ease. He can jump 20-30 feet in the air and is strong enough to haul himself up most walls and buildings. His bite is strong enough that it can tear apart not only human bone and muscle, but thin steel armor and swords with relative ease. However, he does not have any Hulk-like power to resist inertia, and a sufficiently powerful blow (say, a punch from another Lycanthrope) will send him reeling.
Vitality – A blow from even a particularly strong human will not cause Fang to flinch, and will certainly not do any damage to his armor-like hide. An 9 mm handgun round feels like a bee-sting to him and merely leave a welt-like mark. High caliber rounds and thrusts from sharp, sturdy blades can give him far more trouble, as they (in the hands of a skilled attacker) are capable of cutting up his internal organs or severely damaging his arms and legs.
As with all Lycanthropes he has a natural recovery time that is second to none amongst the many races of beastmen, and is capable of healing over most scratches and light cuts within minutes and more powerful blows within a few hours. Organ damage is far more devastating and usually requires healing magic or surgical work to heal, otherwise the healing process will be very painful and can take weeks on end. Obviously this power does not extend into his human form, which is one of the reasons he has given it up in combat.
Silver weapons are a particular weakness to Fang, as they naturally interfere with this recovery power. A light cut from a silver blade could take days to heal, whereas from a steel blade it would only take one or two hours.
Speed – Fang can reach a top speed of around 50 mph at a sprint on all four legs, though he tends to trot at around 10-15 mph when he's not busy hunting. He does not have any special ability to dodge attacks and rarely attempts to. However, he can detect movement and react to it extremely quickly. If you dropped a rock behind him, he could flip around and pinpoint the source of the noise in less than a second. He is capable of landing 3 or 4 swipes before an average human opponent can physically react to the blows. Overall, he is a very fast runner and attacker, but not particularly hard to make contact with in a battle.
Stamina – Fang is capable of hunting and attacking prey for hours on end. With each consumed kill his energy is restored and brings him renewed strength to continue battle. His muscular endurance is far greater than any human. He is capable of sprinting at top speed for 5-6 minutes without any rest, and can hold his breath underwater for nearly 10 minutes at a time. If he is in a physically demanding battle he may tire within 10-15 minutes and will quickly fall into his Rage ability if he is still in physical peril. After that point he will be too exhausted to fight effectively until he gets 6-7 hours of sleep.
Reflexes – As stated earlier, Fang's reflexes are quicker than an average human but in no way enables him to dodge bullets or even swung blades in battle. He is able to process his body motion extremely quickly using his tail and enhanced cerebellum, allowing him to fall from virtually any height and land on his feet. Other than his ability to quickly locate a source of danger, his reaction speed is nothing spectacular.
Fighting Style – He focuses primarily on vicious, aggressive close quarters combat. Once he finds a target he uses his massive bulk to corner them and either crush them into a wall or cut through them with his powerful claws. He sneaks up against opponents when possible, leaping at them from rooftops and diving around corners. When facing more difficult odds he may howl loudly at the moon in an attempt to focus his strength and trick his enemies into submitting out of fear. Against opponents of his own strength, he tends to use a modified judo style focused on parrying in and out of range while landing as many powerful strikes and whip kicks on an opponent's weak points as possible. He may use objects like tables or light posts as projectiles, but these tend to leave him vulnerable to counterattack.
Weapons – Does not use weapons of any kind, instead depending on his massive and powerful paws to cause damage (as described in Fighting Style above). Untrained with any sort of swordplay in battle.
Abilities:
-Lycanthropy: (Will not be used in ANY RPs unless the transformation is specifically agreed upon by me and the victim's owner prior to being used in a plot). A controlled bite that will infect a target with the werewolf disease. Difficult and physically demanding to execute successfully, Fang must be fully intent on creating another werewolf before trying to use this ability in order to avoid simply killing the target. Once the process is complete, Fang feels a temporary sense of emotional ecstasy and instinctively no longer associates the victim with prey. The actual transformation process is long and complicated and is beyond the scope of this bio.
Any skilled White Mage should have no trouble removing the disease from an unwilling participant before the transformation process is complete. Reflection spells or a natural resistance to disease will make the victim entirely immune to the transformation in the first place. A skilled surgeon or medic may be able to draw out the infection before it can spread through out the body. There are also plenty of magical artifacts that would wipe out the disease upon it's entering the body. They CANNOT be used normally to heal someone who wants to be a werewolf, however.
-Rage: When Fang is pushed to extreme physical or emotional distress, his body begins pumping him with adrenaline and burning stored fat and energy at a much faster rate than normal. This is accompanied by an involuntary neural reaction that essentially puts his body on instinctual autopilot. Visually the “beast” side of his body seems to take over, and he is able to fight with significantly increased strength and in a much more vicious and reckless attack style than normal. It is virtually impossible to reason with him or communicate with him through human speech at this point. However, this attack style is much more predictable and easy to deal with for fast opponents, and his stamina rapidly plummets while this ability is in use. By the time it wears off (10-15 minutes tops), Fang is physically and emotionally exhausted. While using this ability he does not have any additional defensive powers, however, and can still be killed using any of the methods described below. Indeed, it is perhaps easier for a skilled swordsman to defeat him at this point because he is not concerned with avoiding attacks.
Magic – Does not use any sort of magical spells in battle. This is a werewolf, not a fireball-shooting sorcerer with wings.
Weaknesses - Explosions, penetration through the head or torso, stabbings in the face, any sort of limb decapitation, swims in lava, being crushed by falling boulders, being crushed by thrown vehicles, being crushed by giant magical hammers, repeated electrocution, teleportation into space, heat vision lobotomy, and godlike Omega spells that turn any living creatures in the immediate vicinity into dust are all particularly effective ways for defeating Fang (as well as most other werewolves) in battle.
Other Skills:
-Along with most other beastmen, Fang possesses an unnatural affinity towards aggressive predators in the wild. He is generally able to run through territories of animals like bears and wildcats without disturbing them, where as a normal human would quickly be attacked. This particularly extends towards wolves, who he is able to communicate with to a limited extent and even able to hunt with as a temporary member of their pack. On the other hand, herbivores like rabbits and deer tend to run away from him on sight.
-Fang's sense of smell is at least 50 times as powerful as the average human. Hearing and sight are also enhanced, and his night vision is as strong as an owl's.
-Natural resistance to extreme hot and cold, as well as most poisons and disease.
-Regarded as a particularly skilled butcher and chef among the few people who have shared meals with him.
-Makes a comfortable pillow if you manage to lean on him while he's asleep.
History – Ray Brahms was a young man in a small trading village who had recently finished his apprenticeship as a woodcutter. One afternoon, when he was about to come back from a long day of work in the forest, he heard a sudden roar from behind the trees. He barely had time to pull up his ax before a huge black furred figure leaped on top of him and bit him viciously on the shoulder. The pain was excruciating, but the werewolf let go almost immediately and began to stumble over towards the other workers, one of them being his father. Just before the werewolf looked poised to strike, it slammed onto the ground and stopped moving. A variety of arrow wounds and deep scars were clearly visible in the creature's back. Ray had just enough time to notice that no blood was flowing from his bite would before he felt another spasm of pain and passed out.
When he woke up he found himself alone in a small windowless room. His head was throbbing, and his lungs ached for fresh air. He ran to the door and wrenched it open, finding breaking the lock far easier than he could have ever imagined previously. He recognized his father and two of the village elders sitting at a long table, and they immediately turned in surprise at his presence. “I am sorry for what has happened, son,” his father began consolingly with downcast eyes. “The werewolf died soon after you fainted, and it appeared to have been mortally wounded by hunters before it had even spotted us. Unfortunately it managed to infect you before that. I don't know why it would target us, but... you know what this means.” The elders nodded their heads in silent agreement.
“I know the rules,” Ray responded quietly, still hardly believing what had happened to him. According to the local custom for dealing with beastmen, he could either allow himself to be imprisoned until an alchemist cure could be found, or exile himself until he could prove that he could master his transformations and act civilly in human society as a werewolf. “I... need to go, there's nothing else for it. I'm... sorry for this, I'll...” he muttered aloud, unable to finish his thought. With that he turned and ran to the forest back to the scene of where he had been bitten, not waiting to see what his villagers would say in response. After wandering for a few days following the tracks of werewolf that had attacked him earlier, he was able to find the pack where it had come from. Surprisingly, they welcomed him with open arms (paws?), and began to teach him how to control and master his new powers. Those few months he remained in training was an adventure in itself, but that's a story for another day.
When Ray returned to the village, he came back in human form. The elders welcomed him back nervously, but forced him to demonstrate his self control in werewolf form at the public square. He introduced his wolf form name as Splinter Fang, as it was the werewolf clan custom to combine the first natural object one had seen after their first transformation (in Ray's case, it was splintered oak), coupled by the name of the clan (Fang). The rest of the town nervously accepted his return on the condition that he was continuously kept under check by the village guard. He was then quickly picked up as a “business partner” by several wealthy trading interests in the village, who offered to pay for his security and rent in exchange for services performing mercenary work that was far too dangerous for the average human warrior. Ray/Fang soon began to depend on these offers and became a full time private soldier and assassin. At the same time he has found it more and more difficult to remain in human form without being the target of assassination attempts originating from groups of raiders he had attacked. Because of this, he gradually remained in human form less and less, and has now remained in werewolf form for over half a year now. It's been a long and uncomfortable existence for him, but he finds enjoyment out of the ever more challenging quests he has been has undertaken and has silent hope for an eventual peace between were-men and human civilization.
