Alright, so hypothetically speaking, human civilization is coming to a close. It is not that difficult to imagine; perhaps fossil fuels drop entirely out of existence while the demand is still high, there is a brief period of chaos and whole countries' abilities to provide basic resources fail, and we fail to emerge from it in time. Maybe the planet becomes environmentally unlivable. Maybe a group of scientists gives the large hadron collider another try, and we have an unstoppable gravity well. Whatever. Presuppose the Earth's imminent doom, and get your music libraries ready.
To you, is this a violent calamity with various degrees of destruction? Is it a calm, sentimental thing? Is it the subject of your awe or outrage? Are you the figure at the head of the ruins – the species’ final historical figure – or are you a thoughtful watcher? Cast the situation in whatever light you prefer, but assemble the core soundtrack you would use to end the world. What will be the last ten melodies we hear?
Now, to make things more interesting, and to give an opportunity for some dramatic one-liners, you should match up each of the 10 songs with a brief caption, commenting on the imagery, the emotions, what have you. It's all fair game, after the scenario is in place. Hell, you could even be comedic about it; God knows that humanity is a hilarious buffoon of a species more often than not. If any of the guidelines are unclear, just take glance over the following format, and do as I do.
I prefer the perspective of being the figure at the head of the species' extinction (that's where the most dramatic imagery is, I find), so that is where the captions are headed.
1. "Davy Jones" - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Hans Zimmer
We are going back -- not to nature, but to the void.
2. "Advent: One Winged Angel" - Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Nobuo Uematsu
For want of four horsemen, I am your man.
3. "Apocalypse" - Hitman: Blood Money
Violence, in its dread application.
4. "The Howling" - Within Temptation
The people of have caught on to what transpires. This will be the longest night in history.
5. "Devil Castle of Confusion" - Chrono Trigger "Battle with Magus" remix, Right Stuff
Your opposition pleases me; one more thrill of conflict to remind us of what humankind was all about.
6. "Orphan of the Flame" - Chrono Cross, Yasunori Mitsuda
Down with all housewives and conquerers.
7. "Zeal Palace" - Chrono Trigger, Yasunori Mitsuda
Wall Street not nearly so powerful as we were led to believe.
8. "Planet Hell" - Nightwish
Unfortunately, a struggle to be decided, not between savior and destroyer, but destroyer and a million religious zealots.
9. “[Cello] Suite No. 5 in C Minor (BWV 1011) – Prelude” – Bach
See how the smoke blots the sun . . .
10. "Life ~ Faraway Promise" - Chrono Cross, Yasunori Mitsuda
The final blast, and all worthwhile for a song. With any luck, we will graduate beyond this life into one without such limits on our potential as we made here.
