Hands down, it's number 1.
I absolutely love that splash effect around Cloud. It's great, but not too much. Well done whoever made it.

My vote will have to go for entry #1 as well. I like it's background pretty much and loving the anime-based of Cloud. =]

number 5 works better with the whole nature theme. I'd have to say number 1 is the worst for this theme, since the only nature thing about it is the words, number 2 is aight, except for the extreme brightness, number 4 was just a picture, so I didn't vote for it.

Thus, 5 got my vote.

I would like someone to explain to me exactly how number 1 actually fits in with the whole 'nature' theme beyond using the word itself.

You're right.
I was wondering about that.
But maybe there is something in that which caused AV to not disquilify that.
Maybe there is some nature brushes with low opacity there ???

that's the reason I didn't vote for it. It's a good sig, but not really into the theme.

Entry number one got my vote, however I fail to see where it fits into the whole theme. But since Angel allowed it to be entered I would assume even the word nature qualifies as it being a 'nature' theme signature.
