Social Networking: The End of being personal?

I know there are links to social networking on this site, but overall what is your perception of what social media does to society in general? Do you think it has more of a positive affect or negative affect on personal relationships? (I do not mean who you like and do not like, I mean friends, families and love interests all in one).
