getting back to the missing year its entirely possible that cloud was sick for a year(as stated previously)

renuinion experimentees were given jenova cells as well not s-cells.assuming of course that when you say "S" you mean S=sephiroth.

and yes cloud having jenova cells in him and being so close to the jenova body(minus head) did stimulate it.i also think that it alerted sephiroth to the fact that jenova was still even entact/alive
