O.O That's extremely odd.
Mine REALLY hates certain disks. I can't play FFX-2 often at my house, it seems to hate the game. It tends to do better with my PS1 discs for some reason... and it always runs extremely loudly. I hope to get a PS3 soon, but I'll be keeping my PS2 anyways. I have a silver slimline one, if that makes any difference... I didn't think it did, but I know that the older ones are much better. My dad has an original PS2, the big chunky black ones, and it still works great!
I think frequently cleaning it, maybe once or more a month, should definitely help. That's what I started doing. Oh, and see if the fan is all dirty. That can make it overheat and melt things >.>
