Well I'm playing FFX right now and...I just got to wondering:
Does sin always take on the same appearance, or does he develop a new form with each new coming.

I had originally thought that perhaps Sin takes on a new physical form each time that a summoner completes his pilgrimage and gives a new sacrificial body. I mean...everyone is different, so perhaps each new human sacrifice gives sin different physical and mental traits.
But might Yu Yevon govern Sin's appearance as well as his mind? After all, Yu Yevon does possess the mind of Sin during each new coming, so does he control the physical attributes as well?

Theories anyone? Ideas?

Probably not, but It is possible when you look at Penance.
My theory is Penance was the form of the previous Sin, as you never get told what penance actually is.
I'll elaborate more in a second my brain just froze.

I don't think the outter appearance of Sin ever changes, he always re-appears as that weird whale beast thing that can swim and fly. However, I do think that the appearance of the inner being, like Jecht for example, changes each time, and my opinion is that Penance was probably that previous being that was being controlled by Yu Yevon and controlling Sin, as throughout the entire game and every NPC, there is no mention of what Penance is.

Good question Rhea. Perhaps Yu yevon took some of the Fayths natural abilities into consideration before making Sins body - Jecht for example, was a blitzballer, and naturally would have been able to survive well in water...perhaps Jechts abilities in water is what caused Sin to turn into a primarily water-based creature..

Yeah! That's exactly what I thought! I know that in battle, Sin isn't Water based fiend, but...everywhere else in the story, it seems that he is a water fiend.

(I know they wouldn't give him a specific element in battle because that would give you an unfair advantage with thunder spells).

And I'm not exactly familiar with Penance, as I have never played the international or UK versions of FFX. ^.^
I don't even know how Penance looks! XD

Penance is the hardest boss of FFX, even more so than the USA Nemesis. He clocks in at 12,000,000 hp, and he rises out of the canyon in the calm lands (which was made by the previous sin battle) after you defeat the dark aeons.

Sorry for the jittery posting, My mind is all over the place and i'm trying to get down what I can before I forget.

Oh well if I had played the UK version of the game, I would probably have more to work with. Sounds to me like Penance might have been some form of the previous Sin, since he came out of the Canyon in the Calm Lands...

If that's the case, then maybe Sin does appear differently...

The battle music against Penance is the same as the music when you fight your own aeons at the end of the game. Penance is definitely a link to Sin for sure, and you should really try the UK version lol, Dark Aeons and Penance are jolly good fun.

Yeah, I had thought about importing the UK version just to see Penance, but...after seeing a 50 minute clip on youtube just now showing the fight with Penance, I thought...no. lol.

But then I wonder who the previous sacrifice was. Not that we'll ever know that. ^.^

You never even get to find out anything about other pilgramages other than Braska and Seymour's mother really, but seymour's mother is Anima I think, and Braska's sacrifice was Jecht. I tried a lot to find elaboration about Penance and other pilgramages but I guess Square didn't think it was of importance to say where the toughest boss in the game came from lol.
In order to see Penance btw you need to beat all the dark aeons first, which literally takes forever.

But Seymour's mother was never Sin, was she? I think she just became a Fayth and Seymour ended up taking advantage of her Aeon.

I still wonder. XD

Who knows, again, SE were too lazy to elaborate on the subject so you can only speculate and make the most fitting theory lol, but I thought Fayths were always sacrifices before-hand.

that may be. but as lulu said in the calm lands when you first got there and into the travel agency, she was on 2 other pilgrimages. but one of which was the aeon yojimbo. so get yojimbo technically get lulu's first pilgrimage leader. the other person i think made it through but turned his back on sin so some other summoner could kill him. BUT he still has the final aeon. so that may be who it was.

No, Lulus first pilgrimage ended in the cavern of the stolen fayth, while the 2nd one with Father Zuke, he ended it in the calm land, NONE of them obtained the final aeon.

But Seymour's mother was never Sin, was she? I think she just became a Fayth and Seymour ended up taking advantage of her Aeon.

From the clip in Zanarkand, it seems to me that Seymour was on a pilgrimage..as i'm sure his mother said that she would will become the fayth?

God knows what Penance is, possibly the sacrifice from before Jecht. Wasn't it Lady Yocun that defeated sin before Braska? Or was that further into the past?

Lady Yucon was much further back. I doubt there is any way to tell which pilgrimage had Penance as the sacrifice if it is indeed the previous one before Jecht.

And judging by what people said above, I guess pilgrimages don't need to be finished to become a fayth then?

thats right. father zuke and the chick in the stolen fayth. i remember now. been awhile since i been there. and penance is the sacrifice b4 braska. i had a chat w/ se and the creator of ff altogether. although it was yocun.

Tell me about it, I FINALLY killed Dark Bahmut but I'm too scared to attempt to kill Anima so I've kinda just put it off

As for what Sin looks like....I'd never thought about it til now lol. I guess I always assumed his outer shell remained the same everytime and the bit where the final aeon is would be the only thing that changed :|

I'm not sure. I haven't seen any evidence that states that you have to complete a pilgrimage to become a fayth. If however, Seymour and his mother were previously on a pilgrimage (which I fail to remember from the game), then that would mean that every current fayth was involved in a pilgrimage before transforming.
And the current fayth/aeons that Yuna has in her power were actually imprisoned and turned into fayths by Yevon. (I just reached the point in the game where that is described).

I don't recal them every being on a pilgrimage either. I thought she just killed herself for him too give hime some power or something along those lines, was he being bullied for being different as a child or something??

I'm hopeless at this theory stuff

but i can shed some light on Seymour

oh yeah it's dark knights time to shine

Jyscal's son, Seymour, is given an extremely tough time by both Guado and humans. Jyscal has no choice but to send him and his mother away to Baaj Island. Desiring to protect him, his mother becomes a fayth and gives him the power of the dark aeon Anima. Tasting the power, however, Seymour desires far more.
