The early Final Fantasy games always had the four elemental crystals that were often in danger and this was an early staple of the series. The crystal music used to always play during the menu screen. Even after they stopped using the crystals as part of the plot, they would try to incorporate them somehow into the plot. For example, in VII, materia took the form of the crystal and that was essential to the plot.

With later games (not including IX), the crystals seem to be missing completely. The crystal music no longer plays during the menu screen.

Do you think they should bring the crystals back?

Personally I think it would be kind of cool to see them worked back into an newer game with awesome 3D graphics. It would give it the classic Final Fantasy feel. Just think of how nice it would be to once again have a character enter a crystal room and have that crystal music playing.
And then get to fight a really hard monster in order to save, obtain, or destroy the crystal. Whatever the plot calls for.

No, the reason the crystals have gone is because the plots have moved on. Save/destroy the 4 Crystals is a bit too basic now. Weve seen it all before its time to move on. although there were a good plot device back then now we expect RPGS to be complex and gripping - 4 crystals i think would make a new FF too short and would give it a deja vu feeling - but not in a good way.

I mean Honestly the Last FF game to have the concept of the 4 Crystals was FFV - and notice how every game AFTER FFV has become a major best-seller ultra-popular and have immensly huge storylines (except FFX-2)

I rest my case - the 4 crystals belong back in the early 90s when RPG and gaming were basic - Viva La Complex plots!

I agree.Give me serious character background,an engaging storyline with mature themes and an awesome battle system over saving crystals any day.Nostalgia is great, but pop in the old games if you need it.I pop in Xenogears and FF Tactics all the time.

There's already enough games with that save some delicate stones or what not.
SE have realised this and moved on, if everyone else was doing this and FF games still did the same people would see them as a generic RPG.
FF has different plots each time which is what makes it so good, instead of the "destroy/protect crystals/gems/stones" which alot of games have adopted into the RPG style.

I think that bringing them back would be nice. They haven't done it in years, and re-using that idea could be like creating a new idea for newer gamers and making the older gamers happy by adding an element that they enjoyed in the older games.

Did you know final fantasy 1 was depednent on crystals? Each warrior was a warrior of light, of with a cerystal composed of what I think was probably some of earth's inactive mana. But yeah, I can't think of any off the top of my head except final fantasies. I'm such a dork.

i think they should bring back the crystals because i dont really like the way the series is going like being set in a futuristic time and place. i like how the old ones had a mysterious midevil feel to them

But wait...I think that FFVII and VIII both play the crystal theme.
FFVII plays it on the main screen, and FFVIII plays it at the game over screen.

But I loved FFIX's crystal theme...it also had four elemental shrines! ^_^

Ohhh I know which one you mean now...the one that sounds like a graduation song? lol.
