Sakaguichi says he may retire

So long as you could use the classic controller, it's actually ideal for JRPGs. I don't need FFXIII's quality of graphics on my JRPGs. I care about gameplay and substance. The wii's graphics are more than adequate, Xenoblade and The Last Story look great.

If Sakaguchi retires then let him. He's probably just hyping up the release of the game. He's still CEO of Mistwalker. Wonder what's going to happen to it if he decides to kick back.

Like I said in the Last Story thread, this sounds similar to when he was in Squaresoft just as the very first Final Fantasy game was to be released.

I genuinely believe he is considering retirement now though. Knowing him, he'll be frequenting Hawaii from Tokyo without the responsibilities anymore of overseeing Mistwalker's projects.

Mistwalker will be fine without him. Sakaguchi isn't like a pillar holding them together. The company will go on, albeit missing a big name. Sakaguchi isn't some kind of massive gaming deity anyway, so this isn't exactly going to be a huge loss.

I thought the system lacked the memory capacity

of the other systems.

shrugs.

I thought there was talk of adding a hard drive or something similar to the Wii but that talk seems to have gone away.

we'll see what happens.

Seeing as how this is more about the person, and not his games, I'm going to move it to Rocket Town as a more "general" gaming news.

*Thread moved to Rocket Town*

Mistwalker likely won't go on without Sakaguchi. The company basically is little more than Sakaguchi and a couple of people coming up with ideas for games and then just kicking back while a real developer does all the grunt work. Hell, that almost sounds like retirement to me :neomon:

If Sakaguchi really does retire though (which I don't think he will, he said the same thing when he left Square) I think Square should bring him back for one last Final Fantasy and then retire Final Fantasy as well. I there's no chance in hell of that ever happening, but I think it would be the right thing to do.

(Well, well, well....look what Andriasang seems to have here. So Sakaguchi may not be retiring after all. Perhaps it was just an ambiguous message.)

Last week, a post by Hironobu Sakaguchi at the Mistwalker corporate blog got gamers buzzing as the Final Fantasy creator seemed to be suggesting that upcoming Wii RPG The Last Story could be his final game. Sakaguchi has since provided his own English translation of the post. Here's the relevant bit about The Last Story:

The energy poured into this project by the development team and I are 120%. I’m hoping you can understand that, however on the other hand, I feel worried and nervous like sending my child on a trip alone. Emotionally it feels like this is my last work, while pouring everything I have gotten into this project. Never regret, but now "I’m enjoying"; furthermore, aiming towards completion. The sense of “This is it” relaxes my shoulders, its pleasant feeling to conduct an orchestra by the sense of my intuition.

While the English translation is a bit confusing at some points, the part about The Last Story being his last game does seem to be clearly figurative. That is to say, Sakaguchi is not really thinking about calling it quits after The Last Story, but he is putting his all strength into the game as if it were his last game.
