For some reason RedXIII's name is different from other character's name.
I found two things which I consider "strange":

1) Usually, when give a name to a character it is kinda "Hi, my name is _____" and then you give the name. In RedXIII's case, he says that Shinra called him RedXIII even before you have a chance to choose a name for him.
Don't know if I am the only one who find it strange. I didn't really want to call him RedXIII after what he said. It feels like an insult or something.
So I called him Fate, because my favorite anime character is called so.

2) Why do I give him a name anyway? Is he a pet or something?
He has a proper name, so why he asks the party to name him?
It is not that the player can name him. He asks the party to name him!
Is his real name a secret or something?
I don't think they would have knew something about him even if he told them his real name.

So what do you think about it? Strange or not?
Did you call him RedXIII or not?

He (or it) was fine with whatever the party calls him. He dislikes Hojo who named him "Red XIII", so I guess he wouldn't be crazy if someone changes his nick name. At least that what I think.

I named him Red XIII, still. I thought it was a pretty cool name for a beast.

Nanaki is his actual name, which you learn when you hit Cosmo Canyon.

At the time you meet him, he remarks that the name Red XIII was a designation given to him by Hojo, and has no consequence to him. In other words, he doesn't care - so he tells the party that they can call him whatever they/you like. It's likely this same attitude (or the spiteful feelings towards his father) that keeps him from telling you his name, so you identify him by what you can at the time. Besides, he thought he was going to split with the party once they hit Cosmo Canyon, so everything seemed temporary at the time.

It's not strange at all. Not nearly as strange as giving someone the nickname "Dagger" to fit in better.

well,i guess he just wanted them to give him a nickname because once he got to cosmo canyon,he was leaving, although he doesnt, but he didnt want them to get attached

I tend to keep the characters name what they are when they join. So yes, I did keep RedXII's name the same. There was one playthrough that I named him Nanaki but it got a bit confusing during the trip to Cosmo Canyon when you learn his name .___.

Red XIII is my alltime favourite character from all the FF series, and i love his true name; Nanaki. Once i found out what it was, when i played through again, i always called him that.

When he says that ShinRa called him Red XIII, that's basically just a tag that the company gives to their experiments, like J-E-N-O-V-A. (I still wanna find out what that actually stands for o_O) so it doesn't really matter what you call him, and tbh, i felt bad about keeping the name that is part of an evil organisation lmao. Although, it is quite cool :D

^ what she said. Although for my latest play through, I named him Nanaki (which he really should make some comment on it if you give him his real name right there in the Shinra building, before you've even been to Cosmo Canyon. xD).

But yeah, I believe he just says you may call him whatever you wish because it doesn't matter to him whatever the party (the player, really. <.<) wants to call him. ;)

Well, since Hojo named him, I'm sure he wasn't actually too fond of the name Red XIII. But, I don't think he minded all too much. It's not he's real name anyway, and Red was aware of that. So, I just went with Red XIII. Though, sometimes I would call him Inuki just to change it a bit.

he thought he was going to split with the party once they hit Cosmo Canyon, so everything seemed temporary at the time.

it may seem a little fucked up but i called him red VIII sooooo.......

I called him Red XIII since I always stick to what the games give...if I went through again I would probably call him nanaki though..

In the game he doesn't seem to care but if you read his novella there is a point where he remembers the name and thinks of it as disgraceful and later her pointedly asks Yuffie not to call him that..the link is right here..
