Red Faction: Armageddon releases in just a couple weeks (pre-order

now and get a $10 credit), and like many, I’ve been anticipating this title quite a bit. Red Faction: Guerrilla was a complete and total blast, so when the demo for Armageddon became available on Xbox Live last week, I immediately jumped in and played through it, several times. Though Red Faction: Armageddon may not be the open world game we’ve become accustomed to, there’s plenty of destruction to go around, and in short, I’m more excited for this game than ever.

The demo starts up with an escape scene between Darius Mason (the main character of the game and grandson of the last game’s Alec Mason) and some disgruntled villagers who believe that Darius is responsible for releasing a new slew of Martian terrors: insect-like humanoids. Darius makes a run for it, and escapes through a shaft to the town’s garbage dump.

The demo features gameplay under the surface of Mars, so you’re treated to a more curated experience as you enjoy focused battles with more memorable environments than those found in the previous game. Red Faction has always highlighted destruction in one way or another. The original introduced the, at the time, ground breaking Geo-Mod technology which allowed players to create their own routes through levels by carving out paths through the environment with their weapons. Red Faction: Guerrilla took this concept a bit further by making fully-destructible buildings that could be taken down with a few well-placed bombs, or torn down with the iconic sledge hammer, one wall at a time.

The sledge hammer makes a comeback in Red Faction: Armageddon, but wasn’t available in the demo. Instead, the demo let’s you play with the latest and greatest toy in the franchise: the magnet gun. It’s one of those ideas where you think to yourself, “how has this not been done before?” It’s a very easy idea to grasp. The magnet gun fires two shots. One into an object or enemy, and another into another object or enemy. The first thing shot is attracted to the second thing shot. It doesn’t sound that interesting until you combine it with the game’s ever so destructible locations. Is there a pesky enemy trying to get you killed? No problem! Fire one shot form the magnet gun into a nearby wall, and the other into the enemy. The wall will be torn from its structure, soar through the air, and crush the unfortunate unfriendly in a spectacular display of chaos. Smash! The same can be done with crystal formations, bridges, pipes, generators, explosives, and so on. Though you may be underground, there’s more to blow up than ever. The best part is that you have unlimited ammo. The developers knew that this would be one of the funnest parts of the game, and didn’t put in needless restrictions to keep you from having fun. Magnet away my friends.

When things get out of control, you may find that you’ve destroyed a path to your next objective. Never fear, you can now fix the things that were once demolished using a handy little repair beam that works as you walk without the need to take time out of your busy schedule to stop and work. Watching a walkway be reassembled as you cross it is cool enough, but recreating generators or other explosive objects is even better. It’s a tool that can be used to great effect once you begin thinking outside the box.

This demo has showcased some really great moments. From the new items and abilities to solid gun play, there’s no reason not to get excited for Red Faction Armageddon
ir
. I’m going to guess that there are still plenty of surprises in store when the full game releases at the beginning of June, but until then, hopefully this will help mitigate the pains that come with waiting for a great game.
