Questions from a newbie

Hey guys just had a few quick questions.

1. Can one play the game without much grouping up and still enjoy it, as if it were single player?

2. Knowing absolutely nothing about the lore/story can somebody pick up the game and learn everything themself?

3. Would all expansions etc be required to enjoy the game, being played solo?

Thanks heaps. I enjoyed FFX and FFXI playing by myself (obv), not really looking for anything more than solo play.

1. Yes. The missions can be played at different difficulties, the easiest being labeled "solo."

2. They can, if they revealed enough in the main questline. There's not much lore, but again quests can be played solo including the main quest. (It's high level missions, but it's very interesting)

3. There are no expansions for the game. They're not even completely satisfied with the final product to charge the players monthly. I heard they they might begin when "the final touches" are completed.

For what I know, XIV is not a sequel to XI. It's very similar, but it's a different universe entirely.

I don't like highjacking people's threads, but it would beat making a new thread just for the question.

So they aren't charging monthly fees for right now?

Currently there are no fees other than the initial purchase. Once patch 1.20 hits, there will be a grace period and then monthly billing is slated to begin. This billing will last until version 2.0 is ready. At that time a second free-trial will commence, leading up to the full relaunch of the game with the relaunch of the PS3 version.

99% of the story content can be done solo.

Group leveling will speed your progression, but is viable through solo play. Personally I find grouping much more fun, and more FF like to me since the games are all about groups going through an adventure.
