I'll direct answer first, then give you some more reading =)

Is playing as a red mage character an option,on Final Fantasy 14? - No it is not
Is Final Fantasy 14 free to play,or pay to play? - Currently Free to Play (but see below)
Could players use PayPal to pay the monthly fees? - Yes and No

Current Classes in FFXIV (following the class adjustment coming in 2-3 weeks):
Lancer - damage dealer
Gladiator - defensive tank
Pugilist - elemental melee
Marauder - offensive tank
Archer - Ranged fast damage
Conjurer - Healer
Thaumaturge - Nuker

Upcoming Jobs in FFXIV (paired in order to match the above, coming in Feb-Mar 2012):
Dragoon - Critical DD with Jump and some Dark knight skills
Paladin - a Knight in the truest sense, Highest Defense, Healing spells, decent MP pool
Monk - High Evasion and Elemental melee.
Warrior - Heavy Hitting and can take high damage (Highest HP)
Bard - An Archer that can use songs to enhance the party (retains archer skillset)
White Mage - Enhanced Healer with further Astral skills
Black Mage - Enhanced Nuker with further elemental spells (Highest MP)

Jobs are party-centric versions of classes with more focused roles. For example a Paladin will have less HP than Gladiator, but a higher MP pool and higher defense. In the current Class system of FFXIV skills can be equipped cross-class (to a certain extent). If you choose to activate a Job, you will have less access to cross-class skills, but gain new Job skills. For example becoming a White Mage vs a Conjurer will give you access to a spell that deals massive Astral Damage (assumed spell name will be Holy) There is a planned new Magic class+job launching with V2.0 or shortly afterward to balance the Melee heavy roster.

Jobs will be unlocked a la FF Tactics. IE: Level Gladiator to 30, and Conjurer to 15 to receive Paladin. Jobs will paired with a Class to determine your Level. IE: if you level Gladiator to 50, then decide to unlock Paladin, your Paladin will start at level 50.

FFXIV is currently free to play, but once version 1.20 hits fees will be commencing after a period of time (SE wants to give players a chance to test 1.20 before deciding to pay [prediction 2-3 weeks based on their roadmap]) Once fees commence they will be in place until version 2.0 is ready.

When V2.0 is ready players will be transferred over and a new Free Trial will start in order to test V2.0. This free trial will last from roughly December 2012 - February 2013. Feb 2013 will be the estimated release of FFXIV V2.0 on PS3 and PC.

As for PayPal, that depends on where you live. SE has stated a new payment system is coming due to player feedback on the previous model. It is likely that players will be able to purchase Crysta (SE Money basically) or subscribe via Credit Card. Crysta SHOULD be purchasable by PalPal if the current rumours end up true. Credit Card Subscrition methods will vary depending where you live in the world.

I can continue with the questions here then.

What will be in v2.0? have they said anything about it or not?
Why I am asking is because I tried it in the beta when it was due to release but I didnt buy it because it was lacking something for me but maybe now, not sure though.
