Question about classes

I was reading on the main website for xiv and I'm pretty confused about how they are working the classes, in the armory section it was saying that a person can be a melee class and just switch to a ranged class whenever they want to? Does this mean you can be any class on the same character? If thats how this game is thats a big letdown for me, im not into that whole runescape idea of being able to do all the class things on the same character, if this is wrong an explanation of what they meant would be helpfull, thanks.

Are you sure it only said melee and ranged? If so, it probably meant a melee can switch to a ranged fighter, but not a spellcaster. They'd most likely be in the Ranger class (or whatever it will be called) having a bow and or pet to attack with.

If it did have the word spellcaster (or some form of it) with the description of switching from melee to ranged, then your fears are probably right. However, I don't think SE would be the type of company to make that mistake, as people would just create one character to do everything with, which wouldn't force gamers to sink their time into multiple characters, which wouldn't make SE as much money with subscription fees and all that.

You fears probably won't be true, but do keep checking for updates if it bothers you that much.
