Yesterday I logged onto the PlayStation Store on my PSP slim and noticed a bunch of PS One games I had not noticed before.

Classics like

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider II

Tomb Raider III & IV (Don't remember the title)

Also there was Resident Evil I 2 & 3 Along with Silent Hill and Final Fantasy Tactics.

I immediately wanted all of them, for 5 or 10 dollars a piece, why not? I don't have the money to buy them... but the idea that they're so cheap and right and the punch of a download is amazing.

With the PSP Go! doesn't it seem like all consoles will soon go to the digital downloading of games? I think the credit... or a large amount of it should go to Apple inc. for iPod Touch and iPhone. Think about it. No more walking to the store to buy games, paying 20 30 or 50 plus for them. With storage getting bigger every other year... what do you think?

Do you think it's possible that when internet gets super fast that big blue-ray sized games will simply be downloadable to a consoles Hard drive?

Its just a thought, but, with Apple inc.'s iPod Touch/iPhone being a preferred gaming device... it's no wonder the PSP Go! moved to the digital download of games.

So, discuss! What do you all think? Isn't it somewhat amazing?

I can see why you would like the possibility of gaming becoming all digitally downloaded content, however I just don't see it ever happening personally.
I think that although internet speed are increasing we are sill encountering too many problems for the system to work like that.

I would like this too happen but my internet would not currently be able to cope with that many new game downloads. And you've also got to think about what happens to trade in prices? they go waaaay down. No one wants trade ins? No store is going to give out more than 1p for a game no one wants.

I suppose that the prices of downloaded games is quite low, mainly because there are no packaging costs at all. There are no delivery costs (this is obviously only if you are buying non downloads online) and there are also no manufacturing costs as far as discs go either. It would see the decrease of game prices but there could be some upheaval in the world of DVD/Game/Blue-ray prices because of it. Not everyone is going to have access to downloads so there will still be some people buying real games and I can see there being waaay too many complaints for this system to actually work.

Maybe in a few years when the entire world has turned into a science fiction novel from 1993 and we are all living in floating houses and everything, I mean everything is wireless.

Well I only see everything going all digital much like how the music industry did. Everyone don't have access to a computer so everyone can't use itunes so ppl still have the ability to buy cds. I personally really wouldn't like all digital games for the fact that I won't be able to buy used copies at Gamestop and I know that a lot of people say Gamestop sucks but really Gamestop have so hard to find games like Zone of the Enders that you could buy for the cheap.

Also if eveything went all digital for games that could hurt Gamestop and others by getting rid of jobs like I know everyone won't be downloading games but if there is a majority then they won't need personnel to handle selling games as long as they have a website with a good server.

Okay. I see the reason behind not killing off disk format for home consoles. But, do you think the other handhelds will follow after Apple now? Do you think Nintendo will switch to digital games? Not for the Wii, but more for the DS. What do you guys think of that?

The only problem I have with the sudden change is... what about the UMD games I bought for PSP? I know they'll make them downloadable from the PSS but I don't want to have to pay again for games I already own.

This is really the only bum side of it for me... as far as hand helds go.

Okay as for handhelds I see no downside to having an all digtal format if implemented correctly. Well I think Sony might do it better than Nintendo if it comes to downloadable games atm anyway.

Nintendo I think is having too many problems with pirates (well the psp too) and the Nintendo DS library is huge compared to the psp's. I think if Nintendo do focus on download only platform they would make it in the next generation of handhelds and probably won't have BC with past DS games.

Before you say that would be stupid if Nintendo don't support DS games think about all the sales they lose to pirates and the flash cards that emulate games. Having even an expandable memory slot would be dangerous with the brillant hackers out there.

So what I'm trying to say is that I belive as we are headed into the next generation of handhelds we might not have the ability to use the disc based formats and most likely might even have to pay for the same game again. Just like PSone classics I think there would be a very steep drop in the prices for past generations of games.

Agreed %100

Thanks for explaining that to me!

I have personally found more fun games for PSP than for my DS. I mainly use my DS for GBA games. PSP might not have a huge library but it has some good games!

I guess I could sell my UMD discs for money and as long as re-buying my disc format games in digital is cheaper I probably wouldn't loose any money.

And I do agree, it would be better for everyone I suppose if home consoles stuck to disc format for games... for as long as possible.
