"Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"

~It is sweet and honorable to die for one's country.

Would you even consider having to die for your country in a war, like say, when your nation is invaded by a foreign power?
Say that the other nation declared war on your country for no reason?
How would that be like if it was the other way around?
Would that affect your perspective?

I would, given the right reasons, and the right morality of my own nation.

i had to write an essay on the poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" so i would be intrigued to know if that's where you got "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" from as it was the last line of the poem :P

And no, i wouldn't die for my country. my country (Britain, UK) sucks. I'd much rather live :)

Hoorrayy!!
You got that on the first post.
Kudos for you!

Yea, that's where I got the quote from.
Caught my eye a while ago...and well, I've loved the last lines of the poem:

...the old lie, Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori....

:)

As George C Scott says in the film Patton, "I want you to remember that no b*****d ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb b*****d die for his country"

Oh, I remember that quote.
It's a funny truth....however.

Hell_Razer:
I would agree with you..
It is a noble thing, but if and only if you and your nation have a noble cause as well. ^_^

I'd gladly give my life for causes less worthy, such as love, freedom and liberty, so yes, I'd cast away my life in an instant were it to serve and better my country. However, it would have to be an instant of my choosing, and the circumstances would have to be agreed to by me, otherwise, no. No I wouldn't.

Don't get me wrong, if push were to come to shove, I'd die for my country, however, I'd only die if I would know that my death would cause an impact to further my own agenda. I wouldn't willingly throw my life away for no reason in the name of my country.

Warm regards,

Exactly Wullfe, I think I speak for most everyone when we say that no one, no one would want to die in vain for a country.
I mean face it, we're human and we want something good to come out of everything we do, in our eyes at least.

I've heard a story my pop told me about when he was in the Marines.

His platoon was getting ready to go to war during WWII and one of the officers asks a soldier if he was "ready to die for his country". The solider said "Yes" and the officer became disgusted and sharply told the rest of the platoon that when you join the Marines, you don't come prepared to 'die' for your country, you come prepared to "kill for your country".
