path of least resistance

trying to demonstrate to my cat basic scientific concepts

such as when he tries to run off the couch and I shove him back on, implying that he should take the path of least physical opposition like any good biological substance and stay on the goddamn couch when I let him go again

unfortunately he doesn't seem to understand the reasoning behind this. why is that
