i did have a complete list somewhere but i cant find it (and havent bothered to look properly). I used the search function here but no luck

Well FFIII in the USA was actually FFVI in the UK and Japan, am i right?

Thats what i'm after, the MAIN FF's in order because Anthology in the UK consisted of FFIV + V but in the USA it was V + VI.

The way they release them takes the mick and is a little confusing.

Some clarification would be nice

As long as you stay away from the old Nes/SNES versions of the games there shouldn't be any confusion in the number. All PS, GBA, PSP and DS releases of the games are the original Japanese number the way it should be.

US:
I
II (IV in Jap)
III (VI in Jap)

Original II, III and V were not released outside Japan until the PS ports. (except III in which case it got a full blown remake for the DS). The numbering problem only concerns the NES/SNES era as all games VII onwards were released more or less simutaniously internationaly.

Don't worry about the differences between the European and US versions of Anthology. They are different because V was already released for the PS in America in a different package.

Well on the NES, I was released in the US and other western territories. II and III never got released outside of Japan because of something silly like they thought the games were too hard for the western market. On the SNES, IV was released in the west but to keep continuity it was marketed as II. This is the same reason why VI is marketed as III in the west also. V was skipped because, like II and III, they thought the gameplay was too difficult or complicated. Eventually I and II got remade for the Japanese handheld Wonderswan Colour. These remakes then got tinkered with futher and ported over to the PlayStation. III was also due for a WSC release but it was scraped because of the WSC going under and Square wanted to move onto other projects. Hense why we never got III until a DS remake. The PS versions of IV, V, and VI (now all reverted back to their Japanese numbering) are more or less direct ports of the original SNES releases and was the first time V was avalible outside of Japan.

Basically, only the original Nintendo releases in the west had alternate numbering. Any releases on different platforms after have the 'proper' numbering.

i remember this controversy i played ff3 (which is actually FFVI i think) and then ff7 came out and i was lik wtf happened to IV V VI? didnt even learn about the true chronology until like a year or two ago

thanks for that, makes sense now.

I did watch the FF Retrospect series that was on gametrailers.com and it did kinda explain some of that but not fully i dont think.

thanks again.

I don't think the game was too difficult, i just don't think the Western world had seen or played RPG's and they wanted to tone it down for us.

Still, annoying how they did it. Either way, i've got a pretty much complete collection minus a couple of games. I will collect them all eventually but it costs a fortune

Moved to Help Booth

I think it'l be more fitting there ^^
