One of the main things I love about the Final Fantasy universe is, of all the games I've played, each world has had pretty advanced technology, big futuristic looking cities, airships and the like, but there isn't much advancement when it comes to weapons, swords & armour, only few using guns. They are using magic and summoning beasts through whatever means. I like that aspect of it, it has a mythological feel to advanced civilisations. One of it's main appeals to me.

What you think of it?

What I feel about the Futuristic feel of the FF games? I love that feel. Like everything is just advanced and we wish our world was like that. lol.

What do you mean that the weapons are not advanced? I mean...what else could they use that could be possible "future" type weapons? All wepons I've seen so far such as future type are all guns of somesort. =/

Swords, Spears, Bows, Daggers. Suits of Armour, helms and so on. These are the weapons of our past, wars used to be fought with these weapons, now we've advanced, we have guns, missiles etc. the closest thing we use to swords etc. these days are bayonetts and knives. They've got all these advanced civilisations, futuristic cities, airships with cloaking devices and so on. That's one of the things I love, futuristic settings, medievil style weapons.

I guess I can kinda see what you are saying. =p. Well, I doubt they will ever remove some of the weapons and the armour but, it would be nice to see an update on a few things.

Sorry to say that, but i actually prefer if they can bring in more guns to spice things up a bit in the FF games... :D

I like their current weapon system (Spears, Arrows, Magic, etc.) but it gets quite tedious to kill off an enemy... They should just throw in a Desert Eagle pistol (or better still, a Sniper or M-16!) and then we can see a mock Counter-Strike battlescene in Final Fantasy!

Both Barret and Vincent in FF7 were gun users but that fact alone didn't make them any stronger than the other characters, and it would have been inimical to the game's levelling-up system if it had, I think.

In a lot of games you just have a choice of guns which really only differ in things like reload time, range and the number of bullets in a round, but in FF there is a variety of weapons and attack methods available, which makes it a lot more strategic and, arguably, more enjoyable. The justification for this, in a sense, is that different enemies have different resistances. So although we might think guns would be the most powerful weapons, the FF universes have monsters who are resistant to them. What's more, there's a clear limit to how powerful the weapons can be when you're fighting at such close range. If you could use nuclear missiles, you'd blow your party up as well... and, you know, the whole town.

*yep futuristic setting, machines and structures but medieval weapons and ancient mosnters is a cool concept.this is one factor that makes final fantasy unique and such a fun game to play.

*well i think using the sword for anadventure game has been a standard since final fantasy 1,now the swords have been converted into machines as well so its soooo cool to have these items in the inventory. and what about magic spells, this is one fantastic element in the game that bridges the gap of futuristic and ancient.

*all in all a great combo, never cease to amaze me,bravo to the final fantasy creatrors! :)

Isnt there a name to that style of fantasy setting which has some archaic aspects mixed with futuristic themes? Thats what i loved especially about IX, it was sort of medieval, but certain aspects that were futuristic and industrial. I definately loved how most weapons were pimped-up versions of swords, bows, spears and the like, especially zidane's double sided blades, were mint lol.
The one thing i didnt like actually was there were too many guns used in VII. Your charcters were bein constantly shot at, most times only takin off 10-20hp, seems to me you should take major damage regardless of your lvl if youre shot..... same could be said about blades and bows though i suppose?

One good example of this is in FFXII, when you sneak into the palace
when the resistance attacks, you see a massive battle between the Imperials and resistance, all fought with swords, people wearing armour etc, and then there's the Ifrit airship, big ass futuristic aircraft, and Balthier and Fran appear on some hover bike type thing
I love that element of it.

Utilising such crafts as swords and bows adds spice to playability, and subtly creates interest for the player to combat. With our own level of technology revolving highly around ranged, mass-destructive weaponry, allowing us to harness such medieval -simple- tools as effective means of reaching our goals is a fun and refreshing change.

Granted it's recurring throughout the entire series of FF, but still - it's a non-reality aspect to war/conflict which we love.

Steampunk is similar. Final Fantasy VI is definitely steampunk, but VII and up probably aren't. And I think the games pre-VI don't even have steam technology.
