I hope you are not disappointed in what you've done. It takes much practice and PhotoShop can be a drag to learn and often frustrating at first but these as beginner pieces are quite excellent on your level if I may say so myself.

You also seem to have a grasp on good cropping which is great! Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing you progress!

Yeah, I used to have several competitive friends as well... However, not everyone becomes great overnight so no one grows at the same rate. Just know in the long run, you'll each develop your own style... That is if you last that long to try and become even remotely original (and don't give me that emulating theory).

I mean, later on, you may be better in certain areas your friend isn't as great in. Don't think of it so much as a race, but if that drives you to be better, than so be it! Godspeed to you. PhotoShop tutorials are all right. They are good for teaching you at first, but as I'm sure for anyone else, they were just as confusing to me at the time, and if you or anyone else is worried about using shortcuts, don't worry about it. Its not something you have to or must memorize. I tend to use the controls the long way anyway.

My best advice is to experiment, experiment, experiment! And on your own if possible. The controls seem difficult and may take a long time to get used to and understand... But with time it'll become easy as MS Paint.

If you have any questions, anything at all, I'll try my best to explain them to you if need be.

Lol just do the same back with the tutorials, just try basic ones and change them to be your own style!!
I was the same, I started in about September, and I've been at uni 75% of the time, I use Photoshop like once a week? And I've actually been improving just by practising, messing about, and it helps if you're artistic.
From the start it was basically implied that I would never be better than some of my pals and already they're admitting I'm catching up - they've used PS for years!!
So just practise, (I've never used a tutorial but if it helps it helps right?) and use things YOU like, cause what some people don't like others do
It's your work after all :]
