So, I need some answers regarding how a side quest works in FF7R. I’ve never played an FF game before, so I didn’t know that “fiends” is a catch-all term for enemies. Since I couldn’t find an enemy called a fiend for Chadley’s side quest in the slums, I skipped it and continued with the story. I then discovered from a Let’s Play that I had missed an encounter with Tifa because of this, and I’m worried that I may be locked out of a ton of Tifa content in the future. Will I still have access to the Tifa stuff later, or do I have to restart my game after over 10 hours of play just to appease Chadley? Thanks all.

I’m not as far as some people (I’m on chapter 9 at the moment) so I had to ask around about this.

It turns out that there might not be a way to go back once you leave an area/chapter. The side-quests are optional and add to the experience of the chapter you are playing. As a result they tend to need to be completed while playing that chapter while the characters relevant to it are with you in your party (or at least in the same area).

I believe that the encounter with Tifa has now been missed by you. It shouldn’t affect the story itself but it might have an impact on the affection mechanics, apparently. That’s what I’m understanding based on what I was told when I asked.

There might also be a chapter select at some point if you wanted to relive it that way.

If anyone else knows more than me about this I hope they can shed some light. I'm trying to complete all quests when I find them to try and avoid this sort of issue.

This came as a shock to me too at the end of the Sector 7 section - it gives you a warning prior entering the bar.

Due to this, I've always had Assess on to scan every single enemy encounter I can - Silly me forgot one of the biggest boss encounters though! (Doh!). There is also one on a later chapter which you have to progress a story point in the chapter to access Chapter 14 The good news is there is a away to scan a lot of enemies you may have missed later on.
