Missables

Im just about to start playing FFIX, it arrived this morning (happy days)
but before i get too far into it i need to know if there are any permently missable items?

I wont bother maxing my stats but i will want all the ultimate weapons and all the summons so is there anything that i might miss that will prevent me from doing this?????
 
As far as I recall from my last play through, all the ultimate weapons/items that you want can be found in places you can (still) reach when you are able to travel the whole world with chocobo's and other vehicles. So just relax and play.

Also, if you miss something now, it gives you a reason to play it again some day and retrieve the item then ;-)

Also take note that on dics 4 you cant go to Conde Petie, Esto Gaza, Desert Palace, lookout in Dali, Oeilvert.

First time I played i forgot to buy Octagon rod in Esto Gaza so i was stuck without Firaga, Thundaga and Blizzaga
 
You aren't going to want to get Steiner's ultimate weapon on the first playthrough, and I'm not sure if that would even be possible. To get it you have to get through the almost the whole game in like 12 hours or something and it's not worth it.
 
I never go for Steiner's weapon in any playthrough. On the contrary, the time counter in my current game is already on 5 hours, and I still have to enter the Ice Cavern... :P

For FF IX, stealing from bosses and doing a bit of searching gets you pretty far. Even without turning every stone and searching the whole world map you get quite a lot of the goof stuff.
 
There are some items that are missable, such as the Mythril Sword, that seem useless, but on Disc 4 you'll be able to synth them into very powerful stuff. I haven't played FFIX in a long time so I don't know all these items, but follow my advice and buy a couple Mythril Swords and don't sell them =)
 
There aren't missable stuff, as in my experience, but I would recommend highly the Chocobo places, in my opinion, I found it pretty difficult doing all of this Chocobo secrets at the end, especially getting the blue chocobo.

So yeah, these kind of things show by themselves, it is good that sometimes you do not skip them.

But the fact that if there are missable stuff, there aren't, just be sure that once you are in Terra, explore everything before you leave.
 
Of those items, a lot of them are fairly easy to obtain. Just remember to steal from all the bosses (as mentioned) and explore the area a lot. There are a lot of subtle sidequests or events that play out when you talk to particular people and follow up with them (what's-his-face's autograph is an example of that), so you sometimes might want to doublecheck an area or two.
 
Yea there are alot of items that you can miss permanently. But I couldn't name them off myself. Better to look at a strategy guide. I have the official strategy guide for the game, but I only use it for boss tactics and to show me how to get the ultimate weapons. I rarely look at it that much.
