So I finally got to playing FFXII, and I'm confused about materia. Can anyone help me, or at least give a little explanation on the stuff? I know it has something to do with your weapons, but what?

Im pretty sure you mean FFVII, as XII doesnt have the materia system. They give you a detailed explantion in the game, and you can go over it again at the beginers hall in the Sector Seven slums. Have you looked at them yet? If you STILL dont understand, PM me and I'll tell you how to do it.

Here's a lil bit more on Materia. Materia allows your hcaracter to do commands they normally can't without materia. Example, you put a unmastered Fire materia on cloud's armour. If a monster attacks you with a fire based spell, cloud will not gain damage, but rather heal his HP instead. But only when put on your Armour Materia Slot.

Also, you can use the fire spell from that materia, but only as long as you have it on. That is Magic Materia.

The support materia, known for it's blue colour, are materia that are support your character and also add somethings into materia. For example, you equpt a thunder materia into your weapon, and the 2 slots are connected. If you put a All materia into the other connected slot, you will be able to cast Thunder on all enemies. Though only once, when you level your Materia further, it can do more attacks.

Indipendent Materia, the purple ones, add effects onto you, but different from others. Example, my 2 favorite purple materia are the Cover materia and the Counterattack materia. When you have the Cover equipted, the person who has it on will take damage for another character if attacked, though not always working, and the counterattack materia enables you do do a physical attack when your hit, not using your ATP bar's loading or your next attack. Combined together on a chained materia slot and your set.

Summon materia, the red ones, are basicly that. They allow you to summon creatures that will attack once with their own attacks and then leave, usually doing a lot of damage, and depending on what creature or person you summoned, it will have elemental damage or status affects. Example, Ifrit will have fire damage and Shiva will have ice, as Alexander will have Holy damage and Leviathan will have water. Other's have their own element or non at all, those of which include the 3 Bahamuts.

Finally, the command materia, the yellow materia. They add special commands when you choose to attack and such, like the Steal materia, it will give you the command Steal when you choose your attack, which your character will try and steal an item from the monster.

Hope this helped.
