Don't you just hate these mass job hirings? I can never understand why they do this - it's illogical.

Yesterday I got an e-mail from this one place I applied at...John's Incredible Pizza >.> It said that they're doing hirings from 9 AM - 5 PM, first come, first serve. Unfortunately, I had school from 8-11 AM but as soon as I got off, I went straight to the place. I was so excited thinking I might get a job.

To my dismay, there were over 100 people in this one area, and TWO people doing interviews. What the hell were they thinking?! They could have at least have 5 people doing the interviews to pace things up. But no, they were really taking their time with each person...this one girl was being interviewed for about 15 minutes. I was in there for almost an hour waiting, and they only got to 6 or 7 people, no kidding. I finally said "Screw this" and left the place. I can't believe I wasted an hour of my time there. They did the hiring process so unprofessional and unorganized...you can literally tell who was hired and who was not because they were doing the interviews six feet from the audience. It was so noisy and I can't imagine how the people were able to hear the questions as they were being interviewed.

I was extremely annoyed. Why couldn't they have done it the regular way? You know, call and make an appointment with 6-10 people or how many applicants they needed - not send a mass e-mail to everyone and have a bunch of people wait for hours only to find out that they didn't get the job in the end. It's ridiculous.

Anyway, anyone been in that situation before or actually pulled it through until the end?

Well, in my line of work, there is a place that goes through its hiring and firing sprees. Well actually, they're layoffs, not firings. General Dynamics Electric Boat would be the place. If you are an engineer like myself, you can land a somewhat lucrative career, but when the engineering phase of the submarine is done, out ya go! Basically what they do is they hire the personnel that they need for that moment. In the case for shipbuilding, it can simple jobs like electricians and welders. But when that part of the boat is done and they need some other trade for help, you get layed off. Just for job security purposes alone, I never applied for that job.

But yeah, I totally understand where you're coming from Mits. I'm surprised that a simple pizza shop actually went to this extreme level. But I guess the more canidates they have, the better the chances that they can hire good help. You can certainly do better elsewhere Mits.

The very thing happened to me last yr when i applied for quick trip. We got there and there was atleast 50 people sitting waiting for an interview. I immediately got on the phone for a ride home. I figured there was no was in hell i was going to get the job since most of the people were 20-30, plus their resumes and such.

That's the thing though - I do understand that they want to look at the candidates and all that, but they shouldn't have roped everyone together like that. They should have picked a few applicants at a time, set a certain time for them and make it appointment-wise, pick a few more and set them on a different time (maybe an hour or two after the first batch), lather, rinse, repeat. That way they can still look at most of the people's applications, but not have it so that everyone waits for everyone for hours.

I totally agree with you, that was very very poor management on their part. It basically sounds like they had a riot of people outside the shop and just did on-the-spot interviews? It was certainly done unprofessionally. Even doing it this way, they could never actually get a feel for how the people actually are, it would all be driven by mob-mentality at this point. What you originally said about have 5 interviewers AND setting up appointments would have been more organized and they could actually learn more about the canidates than they would doing it in a crowd of people. I'm also not a fan of making people wait, and even if it came down to having some kind of waiting time, they should at least have the desency to inform you of that.
