Introduction: N/A

As you lay there incapacitated by the hordes of zombies ravaging at your flesh, you think to yourself, why the hell did I quit smoking? Then all of the sudden you hear something that brings a tear to your eye, your gorgeous young sidekick Zoey let's out a barrage of shotgun shells which leave the zombies in pieces around your body. Instantly she comes over and resuscitates you and tells you to use your med kit. As you come to, you feel a surge of power as you down your pills and pull out your M1A63 Assault rifle. You look over at your other two buddies Francis and Louis who are struggling for their lives and your sight goes red. It's killing time, you think to yourself..

You let your Colt do the talking and let out a rampage of bullets into the infected masses. Breathing heavily you look at the destruction you laid to waste and wonder what became of you. Zombies zombies everywhere dead for good this time thanks to you. Well you sir just saved the day, but it's not quite over yet.. (You hear a Tank Growl)... with a molatav cocktail flaming in one hand you dig deep in your pocket to find a miracle, a cigarette! You light the cigarette with the molatav and breath in.. you know what you've got to do, they all depend on you.

Storyline: 1/10

To be honest it's not fair to judge this game by it's storyline since it does not have one really. You are stuck with 3 of your friends in one of 4 areas where there is a heavy infestation of zombies. Prior to the infestation a spread of a mutagen agent occured in which infected masses of people, and apparently you and your 3 buddies are all immune. Sort of cliche since most zombie movies do the same thing these days.. Resident Evil (t virus) and 28 days/weeks later. The only difference is that there are not just regular zombies, there are also mutated zombies such as Witches, Tanks, Hunters, Boomers, and Smokers.

Characters: 8/10

The creaters went with a different approach and put a very ecletic group of people. You are given the option to pick from one of four people and also a "random" option in which if everyone has already picked a person, then you have to be the last person. You have Louis, Francis, Bill and Zoey.

Louis: He is the black guy of the group. They made his character to seem a little weak to be honest, he seems more of a wuss than Bill or Louis. It's a funny take though on a character, because he tries to be humerous but at the same time cries like a baby when shot by a team mate or attacked by an infected. He was formerly a junior system analyst (computer techy). His gun of choice tends to be the uzi or the M1A63.

Bill: He is the old white guy of the group. They made his character into the retired, vietnam green beret. He is the battled hardened geezer and basically gives lip to most of the others if they shoot him or keep dying. He walks around with a cigarette in mouth and I tend to see him with the automatic shotgun in hand mostly.

Francis: He is the white/spanish guy of the group. They made his character into a biker who has tatoos all over him. He seems to be on the laid back side mostly, but there really isn't much to say about him.

Zoey: She is the hot girl of the group. Formerly a college student, she is left with these three guys to look after her. She rocks the hordes of zombies usually with a sniper rifle in hand. She definitely knows how to handle herself though.. I wouldn't get on her bad side. (sort of like the Alice of Resident Evil)

Gameplay: 10/10

Here is where the game accells. With the valve HalfLife2 engine, this game was originally developed as a modification. If you remember counterstrike was the same way at first, ah the glory days. So anyways, you can expect amazing graphics from the boys at Valve.

In the game you start off with options between two guns. Either you can pick up a single shot shotgun or a uzi. You also start off with a pistol and a medkit. Proceeding in the game you are given more option with guns. I call them "special weapons" as they are much better. You have the AutoShotgun, the Colt, and the Sniper Rifle. Most people prefer the autoshotgun because it does the most damage per second.

There are also three secondary things you can pick up along the way. Pills, that will temporarily boost your health, use these sparingly. Also there are Molatavs and Pipe bombs which can take out multiple zombies at once.

I will say this once, melee is your best friend. If you see a horde on the way and you friends are out of reach, back into a corner and melee until your friends back you with gun power. If you intend to do any expert scenarios, then melee is a must, or you lose.

The zombies are classified into six types of categories.

1) Normal Infected - These are what you be faced with constantly anywhere from 5 at a time to 100.. all depends.

2) Smokers - These have the ability to wrap their tongue around your head and drag you across the map. A friend can either melee you so the tongue breaks off, or they can shoot the smoker. Upon killing one they blow up in a plume of smoke.

3) Boomers - They puke on you and when they die they explode into a plume of blood and flames. If you are puked on you get blinded temporarily, and also are swarmed by normal infected.

4) Hunters - These are definitely challenging if you are unaware where they are coming from. They jump on you from across the map and take you down to critical life in a matter of seconds. If a friend doesn't kill him or melee him off you in a matter of seconds, you might be pushing dasies.

5) Witches - These can be avoided if you are unexperienced in how to kill them. I encourage them though, because it's a challenge. They are usually crying in a corner, when you come up on one they get startled. If you are quick to find her hairline and crown her.. (cap her in the head), then that's that. If not you are dead instantly. (depending on difficulty actually)

6) Tanks - (Tank Growls) RUN!!!!! all I can say is don't be stupid with these. They can climb anywhere and are like the Hulk's of zombies. They throw cement at you and run at top speeds. The best way to kill them in Expert is to throw a molatav at them, and run around till they burn out. If you turn and fight.. they will kill you.

The gameplay will leave you breathless mostly, and you need I mean need good friends to play with. You will die over and over again at first until you get accustomed to your friend's gameplay. Everyone is good at their own thing, so just be patient and melee! (repetition for a purpose)

Controls: 10/10

Very basic controls. I have found no control glitches besides double melee, but that will help you not hurt you. You of course have your right trigger to fire and the rest of the buttons you can configure to your own want and needs. These are the smoothest controls I've seen on any FPS yet, they don't get all bogged down like Gears of War does. The cross hairs are easy to use as well, this game can be picked up by any age group. When aiming the pipe bombs just realize that you need to be aware of your surroundings. I know some like to just throw it and run the other way.. but I've seen some people throw it and it hits a roof and comes back down a blows them up. Same goes for Molatavs with your aiming, make sure to aim them away from your party or you will all die.

As for guns, remember friendly fire is always on. If you are using the Autoshotgun you can kill and I don't mean incapacitate, I mean kill your team mate in one two two shots. So aim that stuff elsewhere. You can jump, crouch and melee as I cited before.

Graphics: 9/10

Excellent graphics as usual valve. Everything is slightly dark, since it is never daylight really. They made it so when the characters talk, their mouths move, so that's a big added plus. The flames from molatavs looks so real. The character design was down to a "T" as well. The buildings and inoperable vehicles are nicely done, even if often a little cartoonish from time to time.

If I were to ever imagine a zombie, these are what they would be like. They used quite a bit of graphic design to size all of these up. The only thing i can't imagine is how they timed the Waves of zombies they throw at you at once, sometimes it is random and sometimes it is plain frustrating.

Sound: 10/10

They pulled out all the stops in this game. The voice acting was great because you could actually imagine these people to be every day human beings. They added the mouth moments while talking, which I mentioned before. They also added realistic gun sounds for each of the guns.

For one when let's say a hunter, tank, witch, boomer, or smoker is near, they make a certain distinct noise. If your team mates are good with their comm skills, people will be aware of these at all times. Also if you are a little hard of hearing you can cheat and turn captions on. When the captions are on (which I recommend in expert) you can see and hear whenever anything is around. It also alerts you when hordes of zombies are on the way.

Unique Extra Features: 8/10

They added a good amount of easter eggs in this game. For instance if you notice how there are alot of "no smoking" signs, I find it comical how "Bill" is always smoking. When you die you can respawn in this game, but it isn't instant which is nice. Your friends have to find you and it takes 3-5 minutes for you to respawn. There is also writing on the wall you can notice in which of course is always desparing quotes like "WE ARE ALL DOOOOOOMED!" Everyone has random commentary in this game to from Bill to Louis.

Online play in this game is ungodly amounts of fun. I would give this game a very terrible rating if it was only single player. You honestly have to employ evey tactic you know in order to get past the zombies and into the military rescue vehicle at the end of these "scenarios" as I call them. At the end of the last map you are ask to radio to the military.. when doing so it alerts the masses of zombies. I'd suggest getting to know your friends, because you don't wanna end up with some random strangers.

Replay Value: 9.5/10

Like I mentioned before the online gameplay is phenomal. It gives you a community of friends you can hang around. I recommend only one thing, make sure you get people who can stick it out there. I mean those that are humerous.. because those that are serious all the time.. while gaming.. well this will get on your nerves, plus they might leave if you don't act serious.

Single player replay value.. eh this game can get wearing.. I won't recommend this at all for single player.

Overall Rating
: 8.5/10

High rating for fun factor, graphics, controls and gameplay. I recommend this game strongly as a buy, not a rental.
