League of Legends is a great new FREE game made by Riot games. It's the same genre as DotA, but expounds upon the gameplay and addresses game balance issued that DotA has.
In League of Legends, you play the role of a summoner. Each game you summon one of 40 "champions" that you actually control during the game. In battle, you can level your champion from 1 to 18. You can usually get to 18 over the course of the battle, and this champion level resets every game. You also have a Summoner level from 1-30 that takes many battles to accumulate. This level never resets, and allows you "Masteries" that provide small buffs in game, but doesn't dramatically favor the higher leveled player.
Also, in game you can purchase items, and combine items to make stronger ones.
The gameplay itself is like a cross between an RTS, and MMO style combat. It's a 3/4 top down view like an RTS, but you only control your champion. There are minions that have a very limited AI that spawn and rush down one of three lanes towards your opponent's base. In between the base and you, are turrets that guard the way. The object of the game is to push through the turrets and destroy the enemy's base.
Between Masteries, Runes, Summoner Spells, Champion Abilities, and Item trees, there are near endless strategy options. The gameplay is fast, exciting, and there's no tedious grind like in MMO games.
I highly recommend it.
