A "rather gruesome" rotten tooth belonging to late Beatle John Lennon has been sold at auction for more than $30,000.

Canadian dentist Michael Zuk, who has written a book about celebrities' teeth, bid by phone yesterday to buy the pre-molar tooth, which Lennon gave to his housekeeper Dot Jarlett as a souvenir.

Karen Fairweather, from Omega Auctions, described the tooth to the BBC’s Radio 5 before the sale.

"It is rather gruesome, I have to say. It's yellowy-browny in colour and it has a huge cavity," she said.

"[That's] probably the reason it was extracted."

DNA testing has not yet been carried out due to fears it will damage the tooth.

Mr Zuk plans to display the tooth in his surgery as well as take it on a tour of dental schools and surgeries around Canada.

"Once I heard it was up for sale I had to have it," he said.

Um some people really go too far.

Can't people just remember the dude?

Do people really have to acquire dead celebrities body parts and such?

Ugh, whatever floats your boat.

Ugh, I wouldn't mind if the tooth was on display but to sell it off?

That's just wrong, I mean John Lennon (if he ever finds out, who knows...) would not appreciate it if a part of his dead body was sold off. Hell I would never allow it happen to me if I became famous and died later in the future.
