Actually, now that I look back on American animation.......
American animation had it's good points way back when, when the storylines were actually good and original. Take Scooby-Doo, classic. Space Ghost, yes, before his modern makeover, the show was actually pretty cool.
They weren't exactly exciting but at least they were entertaining, and they are extremely episodic, unlike Japanese anime, with each title having it's own interlocking storyline.
American anime = for short entertainment
Japanese anime = if you're looking for a 'novel' experience or lasting adventure.

Meh, american cartoons will always be #1 in my opinion.

I'm not an anime person at all, but if I had to choice one or the other, I'd go Japanese. Sure it's easier to understand the American language more for me obviously, but it doesn't flow as smoothly as the Jap versions do.
