Is Sephiroth Really That Popular?

Sephiroth is cool I have to admit, but I prefer Kefka in terms of 'being evil' and as a villain.
He's so much more evil than any of the other villain in FF. Kefka actually achieves what he originally set out to do (most of it), he poisons a city's water supply and even wanted to build a monument to non existence, if that's not crazy and insane what is? (that and he has a cool laugh)

Even though I like Sephiroth something in the prequels made me begin to dislike his character.
In the origional he sealed himself up in the Shinra mansion, read heaps, misinterperets it and then goes nuts under his own crazy assumptions but in the prequels, Genesis (was it Genesis? I 've forgotten) talked him into going nuts, how lame.

What makes Sephiroth so popular, I wonder? besides the masamune.
 
Why dont people ever say Shinra or Hojo as being the main antagonist in this story? Had it not been for them, Sephiroth would have been sane and been in SOLDIER.
 
I believe so.In many polls he has come number 1,not to mention that he's the most famous FF vilain.
 
I'm a huge Sephiroth fan. Not a fanboy, mind you. Those are annoying. Sephiroth was an amazing character, with deep motivations and a tragic past. Kuja was also appealing due to this, they both had awesome designs. Kefka, I despised. He was absolutely pathetic as a character. No true motivations, terrible character design and being unbelievably annoying made him a an embarrassment. It's good that the rest off FF6 was excellent, he seems to be it's main weakness. Sephiroth is half of what makes FF7 so spectacular, Kuja is the same with FF9. Kefka, he makes FF6 worse.
 
To me, I don't see Sephiroth as being popular... I just find him annoying because of him still being popular to the fans for this long. It's like saying he was voted "Most popular villian at school" and he is the villian at school everyone thinks is the best but is a complete annoyance for that reason.

I guess my problem lies with the fact that 11 years has past since FFVII has been released and it's still the most popular Final Fantasy franchise series around. To me, that's getting old.
