One of my favorite things in the world is irony, so I thought I'd make a thread about it. This thread is meant to be a place to post things that are ironic, whether they happened to you, or are just something you thought of.
I'd like to prelude this topic with a few simple statements. Irony can be a very difficult idea to grasp hold of, so please look up it's definition and carefully determine whether or not your example is truly ironic. For example, while Alanis Morissette may have a song out there based on this topic, it doesn't mean she knows what irony is. The only irony in her song is that her song itself does not have anything ironic in it. Maybe it's because she's a genius, and the song itself was supposed to convey that exact idea, but I would be lead to believe that she instead just does not understand irony.
Do not be afraid to admit that you don't know what is really ironic and what is not. Many scholars don't even quite understand it, and I certainly still struggle with it myself. However, if you have something that you truly believe is ironic, post it here.
With that being said, I will start this off.
1. A gas tanker running out of gas.
2. "A bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." -ConAir
I can't wait to see your examples!
EDIT: Upon further review, Alanis Morissette does actually have an ironic example to give us in her song.
"Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly/ He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye/ He waited his whole damn life to take that flight/And as the plane crashed down he thought, Well, isn't this nice?"
Not only does this contain an instance of irony, it truthfully contains two.
The first, and most obvious (I'm not too sure how I missed it the first time) is the fact that a man who has never flown before, out of fear of a crash, has his plane come crashing down on his first flight.
The second is when he thinks "Well, isn't this nice?", which we can probably assume is sarcastic seeing as how there is nothing all too "nice" about having your plane hurtling toward the Earth at ungodly speeds with the inevitable result of lots of pain, or more than likely, death.
Double Edit: I found this site with a few alternate lyrics to Alanis' song, which aren't ironic, but still funny. I thought I'd share my favorite, which is also most related to the forums in general.
"It's like 10,000 words when all you need is a few.
It's being clear and concise and also having a clue.
And isn't it laconic...don't you think?"
