Okay, lets just say that I'm not sold on this new format, not yet, anyway.. I've only invested 12 hours in the new game, but after spending hundreds of hours on all of the previous versions I'm sure it will probably be ok..
Here's my problem....
I just can't seem to understand how the quickening thing works.. Right now I have Vaan with 2 quickenings, red spiral & ???, anyway, how do I get this thing to do a lot of damage? what is this hit R2, thing?
This is nothing like the previous versions I.E. Aeons, etc.. I just need some help..
I am getting my ass kicked by the Judge on the ship, actually more like his minions are kicking my ass, maybe I haven't done well enough on the new grid system?
hmmm...
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions I'm sure to get..

(This explains concurrences as well.)

Credit goes to The Brady Games Publisher. This is straight off the guide. This is for those having trouble using M > Q >C and for those who Don't Have the Guide.

The Quickening system is much like a slot machine, so there's some luck involved. As the initial attack occurs, up to three lines of text appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen, one line for each character participating in the attack. Think of these lines as the WHEELS of the slot machine.

The "wheels" randomly cycle through four possible outcomes. They will display the name of a character's level 1, level 2, or level 3 Quickening or the words "Mist Charge". When they appear in white, the player can activate the command by pressing the button shown to the left of the line text. NOTE: that lines appearing gray in color aren't available.

With a little luck, there will be a white line or two available from which to choose, but eventually three gray lines will appear. Press the R2 button when this occurs to shuffle the commands again in hopes of getting a white line or two.

The player can initiate as many attacks as possible withing the four second time limit. By achieving certain attack combinations, the party unleashes a powerful Concurrence that delivers a devastating Final Hit to the target and any nearby enemies. So what makes the white and gray lines appear?

There are 8 Concurrences. If you don't know what a Concurrence is then let me explain. Think of it as a Final Blow after you're done with all your Chained Mist Quickenings. Concurrences aren't "automatic". You will need to trigger them via certain conditions.

Requirements:

Black Hole: 4 lvl 1Quickenings, 4 lvl 2 Quickenings, 4 lvl 3 Quickenings

Whiteout: 3 lvl 1 Quickenings, 3 lvl 2 Quickenings, 3 lvl 3 Quickenings

Ark Blast: 2 lvl 1 Quickenings, 2 lvl 2 Quickenings, 2 lvl 3 Quickenings

Luminescence: 5 lvl 3 Quickenings

Windburst: 5 lvl 2 Quickenings

Torrent: 2 lvl 1 Quickenings, 3 lvl 2 Quickenings

Cataclysm: 7 lvl 1 Quickenings

Inferno: 3 lvl 1 Quickenings

um you might one to have atleast two people with Quickenings. So heres a basic rundown of it. When you use Vaan's red spiral or his other one, you initait the quickening mode. When you look at the screen there is this bright blue bar across the bottom. This is the time limit bar. On top of the time limit bar is the character's names who have a quickening and are currently alive, in the active party, and aren't disabled. If their name is highlighted and has either a triangle, x or a square button in front of it, you press that button and another quickening will take place. If there are no names highlighted you press the R2 button, initiating a shuffle. The shuffle, shuffles the quickenings until something is available, this may have to be done more than once. If you have initiated another quickening the time bar and shuffle button will be gone, and the next character's name and their next quickening will be displayed. when the next quickening comes up, you will be able to do it again over and over until you can't do it anymore. Each time you initiate another quickening the time bar wil go down faster. If you get three or more quickenings in a row, using more than one persone's set of quickening's you will initiate an extra quickening. This is an extra attack where all you do is watch the "prettyness" as it destroy's your enemy's. The one's i've found are inferno, catyclysm, and torrent. Each one adds atleast another 2000 damage, depending on what level you are. If you get a chain of atleast seven you can do damage upwords of 10k or more. It is highly difficutl and unlikely that you will get catyclysm your first time, as you need atleast nine hits. Don't worry about keeping track of your current amount of hits as the game tells you.

if you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask.

bottom line, when you use one, there name cant be used again. Hit R2 for a chance to use them AGAIN. This is how you build up your chain.

wow i got to raithwalls tomb wihtout using quikenings. maybe i need them now im stuck at the dumb demon walls

well with ther demon walls, by pass the first one, and kll the second, the first one is hella hard, just ignore it.

The first one is hard, I killed it last night though. All of my characters have at least one quickening and if you keep just bringing a fresh one into the party one at a time you can kill the thing without taking a hit.

Same for the judge and the Avion. I'm starting to think that if done right the quickenings can make the game too easy. Although it doesn't seem like as many people took the time to get 'em as early as I did.

naw dearsergio. The game gets harder and mist attacs are not always the answer to beat a boss. Then again, I beat the game and never got more than 1 mist on everyone lol

I do realize that this thread is related to FFXII but I'm moving it to the most appropriate forum. ;)

Quickenings have made the game pretty easy for me so far... I learned them very early for all characters simply by earning a lot of LP and going straight to them on the license board. Was able to 1-shot the Judge and only took 3 quickening sessions with a chain of 3 to defeat Rocktoise.

Quickenings almost irritated me because it made the game so easy. Then I tried to do the Wyrm hunt in Westersand or w/e that place is called. He's hard. :(

Also, practice Quickenings with regular monsters if you wish, so long as you're very close to a Save Point or can get to one easily (so you can recharge your MP again) so you can try to be as fast as possible when watching for the buttons to press at the bottom of the screen. Also unlike Overdrives, you don't have to "build" up Quickenings as long as you have enough MP for it. Oh and when the buttons appear at the bottom, remember to hit them at least twice since sometimes hitting it once doesn't assure that it'll follow through unfortunantly...

If you're lucky, you can get many chains of quickenings. My highest ever was 13 followed by Luminescence at the end.

Make sure you search out all 3 Quickenings for each character on the license board. They really help when you're in dire need of it. Also it pretty much increases the chances of more chain hits with the Quickenings.

Good luck!~
