I was watching the intro of the anime, and I saw some recognizable names. Was this just kind of a project an anime company started with Square's permission, and that was it? Or did Square actually plan this anime and such?

For example, Full Metal Alchemist has links to Square Enix, the author mentions multiple times that her editor Shimomura works there, so it's not unthinkable to believe they probably had a hand in it.
