Help How do I answer the Quiz Monster?

While I was roaming around the forests in the Lindblum area, I encountered a quiz monster(don't know the official name). He asked me a question and offered two answers with the O and X buttons.

I was unable to answer him however because the ATB was still in effect and I was forced to choose commands for all my characters when their gauges were filled(I chose defend for everyone).

My question is how am I supposed to answer him? The first time I ran into him, the ATB system was still in effect, and the game treated this encounter like a normal battle.

X = false

He asks you a series of true and false questions. You have to attack either the O or the X to answer his questions.

He's called the Ragtime mouse and you will get gil for a correct answer and an increased amount of gil for sucessive right answers.

There's 16 questions in all, one for each coupled with an incorrect or correct answer. however you have to get all 16 right to get a special prize!
