Help Highwind pilot level and limit break

Been playing through the re-release of the game and I was thinking about the level of the Higwinds pilot and if it actually does anything. I was rather amused when one time I talked to the pilot it said he had a limit break. So does the limit break and level of the pilot actually do anything or is it just there for laughs?

It really is just for laughs, the farther you go in the game the higher the level of the pilots. In the end you read it just for fun, and that is about it.
