We just created a new franchise with a character or story that really rocks! We know it's one thing to create multiple sequels of it to "further the brand" and make more money off this one idea... but we're going to take it a step further and try to cram the same old shit in a new package down your throat for the next ten odd years! *Fin Drama*
I love new videogame franchises... and I love when developers continue those franchises (Half-Life, Half-Life 2). However, it gets really old when developers take the same old crap and repackage it over and over and over again. Obviously Nintendo is guilty of having incredibly long standing franchises that never change their main characters or plot (Mario, Zelda, Metroid)... but they're not nearly as bad as the developers who manage to have a franchise full of crap, get one hit title, and then repackage it over and over and over again.
A good example of this is Resident Evil 4. The RE series hasn't been good since the original came out in 1996 and wasn't good again until 2005 for the Gamecube. The game is now going to the Wii, after already stopping at the PS2. Same game, 3 platforms, we played it 2 years ago... now go on and make the next game. Try and make it not suck too, ok? RE isn't the only ones to do this either... there are a lot of games that are exactly the same way. Actually Square-Enix is pretty guilty of it themselves. They're pushing games made forever ago onto new platforms. Even if there is a heavy fanbase encouraging it, they're still milking the games for all their worth. And I don't think this topic would be complete without someong bringing up the Madden series... but I'll leave that to someone else.
