Greenpeace is asking for a lawsuit.

I really don't understand why people are getting outraged over this issue. This is the second site where I've seen people act as if Greenpeace called for a ban on all video games or something. They're just asking companies to make consoles that are more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle. There is nothing unreasonable about that. Also, Greenpeace isn't suing anyone. I'm not sure what would make people think that.

This is the website, incidentally.

I can understand why they'd want to sue them as if somone used a "TM" character, that would technically be illegal. As for their choice of ways of saving the environment, why pick consoles? How long have consoles been around? I'm pretty sure those large metal blocks known as "cars" have been around longer and have contributed to much more damage than any amount of consoles could do. I'm not against them campaigning for the environment, but they have much better targets to go for.

I can't really see these videos or go to all of these links because of school. But, I'd like to start of by saying that saving the environment is an admirable effort... But, like other people have voiced, game consoles aren't a large threat. To be honest, I keep all my consoles stockpiled, so I don't throw them out, even if they're broken.

Also use of characters copyrighted to another company IS against the law if they're used for profit or campaign. Even if it's not used for profit or campaign (like fan art), you still have to give credit to the creators.

Also, GP should worry more about cars and planes and the like, which dump chemicals into the air every time they're turned on. Consoles are, really, an extremely minor issue compared to them.

Greenpeace has already run similar campaigns for auto-mobiles and the like. I doubt Greenpeace thinks that consoles are as big a threat to the environment as the other things they campaign against but they obviously feel there is still a genuine problem that has needs to be addressed.

For the record, I'm not a big Greenpeace fan and think their stance on quite a few issues are stupid. I just don't see why people have a problem with their current campaign, baring possibly copywrite infringements that no one except Nintendo/M$/Sony should care about anyway.

I honestly thought you were better than that. But that statement just acid rains all over my forest!

Hate to break it to ya Darkstar, but Greenpeace ARE bullshitting hippies. They do alot of illegal things and make up alot of their "facts." And giving Nintendo a zero on their ranking just because they didn't have everything? Just stupid, it only proves they're trying to mislead people into joining their side.

Now, if tey are all going to get a lawsuit, then the rest of us should as well. There shouldn't be an Unofficial Forums to Final Fantasy. We have all, at one stage, drawn or taken a picture of a game, then, we should get a law suit. Sorry for ranting, but I am just really pissed off at you guys for taking it so far.

There's a difference. We're not using it for publicity or to gain money/support. Greenpeace is doing quite the opposite. They're using the trademarked characters in an unfounded smear campaign to gain support. That support inevitably draws in money from supporters, thus making money off properties not their own.

I love how Greenpeace can't think of any legal ways to save the environment and that they have to stoop this low. Seriously, of all the things that are harming our environment, they pick this? Why not do something constructive, like offer advice/ideas on how to cut down on use of oil/cars in the US? Why not think of ways to cut down on greenhouse gases, or prevent warming? "TEEHEE LUK GUISE I MADE MARIO CRAP OUT A TURD ISNT I CLEVAR?" Simply childish and unprofessional.

I know that they were in the wrong here, but the way you said it, "Greenpeace are bullshitting hippies". Just didn't quite like the way you said it. But I am going to write them an e-mail asking them many questions, such as, why in this format? Can I please have some more information on this topic, such as satistics (yes, I know, 90% of statistics are wrong, but just for a general idea) and many more questions. I'll post up their response when I get it.

Oh yeah, Finnegan, you have been around me for quite some time =O

Thanks, Darkstar... More information should clarify some things... I've finally been able to watch the video now that I'm home... It's not done with very much taste, I should say... It's almost as though they tried to get people to join their cause by offending people... However, it could be they weren't INTENDING to be so forward... The extra info would help.

That is what I am going for. But I can'y get a head Person email, so, i'll go one step behind, and go to the Discussion Forums, hopefully that might help as well while I look for his E-mail

I'm pretty sure that if they had a tamer video, it would be ten times easier to shrug off. If it were a tame and professionally made video, frankly I doubt anybody would even notice; this video is attempting to incite people to figure out what the problem is and how to solve it. And for people talking about cars and oil, it's not as if this video campaign is the only one GP is working on.

Compared with all the illegal things that GP has done in the past, I hardly think that a crudely made video is something to get angry about. It's kind of a step up.

Yeah. But it offends me as a gamer, and it's almost an insult on my intelligence, some of the stuff they said... They say recycling consoles can harm the environment and would have a devastating impact if they all got recycled. As far as I know, nobody throws out their consoles. Even if a console is broken, they get it fixed or something, normally...

However, I'll wait for the information first, before I pass too much judgment.

Yeah, it sort of offended me as well, as a gamer, but trust me, It is hard trying to get your voice heard to a world who won't listen or doesn't care.

I won't be able to get the info up today, or maybe tommorow, I have other things on, so, could someone please PM me to remind me, probably tomorrow, thanks

I dunno... I didn't take it so personally, since it's not as if they were trying to make fun of gamers so much as the game companies. Some of the issues include workers being put through unsafe working conditions (not being provided proper protective gear, or perhaps not even being told that they are working with toxic chemicals). This stuff is pretty typical of large corporations (sweatshops, toxic factory emissions, faulty products), so I'm not sure what GP expects to happen.

Yeah... I'm not exactly Greenpeace's biggest fan, but it concerns me that people are writing off this issue just because Greenpeace is getting behind it. So maybe some people think GP is bull, whatever; but I hope they don't turn away from the issue just because of that.

Trust me, if we can ram ships ten times the size of us and still be happy, this won't acid rain over us

I like the new avatar, Darkstar... ^^ Anywho. As I said... I think helping the state of the planet is a commendable effort... Which is why I'm not automatically writing off Greenpeace before I know a bit more.

I just don't want people going around flaming greenpeace, without all of the facts, so, that is why Im doing it

Oh but it's okay for Greenpeace to not have all the facts or make up facts? Right.

And what's bad about the video being unprofessional, crude and immature is that it shouldn't be. If you have a cause and want to get the message across, you should be professional about it, not infringe upon copyright laws and make it childish.
