Help Got the game, crashed the instant I started playing.

I got FF8 for PSX on my birthday, just dying to play it I run downstairs and shove the disc into my PS2. The copy was off of ebay and it was slightly used with a couple of scratches, nothing that looked harmful. I fogged up the disc and wiped it with my shirt before inserting the disc. I turned on my PS2, grabbed the controller and hit New Game. The intro scene appeared. I watched and enjoyed. All the way up until a part where Seifer is just about to slash at Squall. It freezes. The image froze right on the screen. Bewildered, I said ":holyshit:" in my mind. I tried the disc around 3 times already. Crashes at the same spot each time. Right now I'm on the 4th time, I decided to leave it running to see what would happen. It froze at that spot again, as expected, and then I left and got a drink. Minutes later I came back and I noticed the image changed. It was frozen at a scene with Rinoa on the screen. Apparently while I was gone, it unfroze for a sec and the video continued for a few seconds and froze again on that image. I freaked out again, then ran over to the computer and typed this.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY GAME?
 
The scratches may seem minor but its a possibly they're deeper and have reached the data on the CD. I would try an actual CD scratch remover and see if that solves the problem.
 
K, I got my dad to bring it to Blockbuster since they offer CD scratch repairs... I hope it works :D Disc one seemed to be the most damaged. Disc three and four are like... perfect. Oh and also... Where does the game manual go?... I don't think I got one T-T. Even if I did, where would it fit in the case? o_O

As far as your problem goes, it sounds to me like the CD is damaged at some crucial point. As was previously stated, the issue with scratches is less about the amount of them and more about their depth. A single deep scratch is going to wreak havoc on your game...and since it's always freezing at the same point, that's what seems to be the problem.

1. The Blockbuster repair did nothing, the guy at the store said "It's not a garuntee that it will work, since it's a black disc. And I hope you get it working and play the game, It's a really great game."

2. The purchase came with no manual, but oh well, there's practically an in game manual anyway and I already played over half the game on the PC.

Well that sucks.
 
Well That sucks bra. Hmm, There are a lot of emulator sites around and now that you own the game you can own the Rom legally, so Id go download EPSXE and then find the four discs for FFVIII.
 
The thing about downloading the rom is that somepeople don't have super fast internet. I hope you do because if you plan to do it, it's over like a gig of data. I had to do it at my aunts.

I have lots of games that are barely scratched but fail to work. I think they should make those things more duarble.
 
I already know tons about emulation, I've emulated Final Fantasy X on this PC, I don't want to emulate... I dont want to run into problems half way through the game that I can't fix, and besides; I just figured out FF8 has analog support :O

I'm seeing if I can get a working disc one from the guy that sold me the game.
 
Ah good deal I hope you can. I bought Chrono Cross From a pawn shop and it looked liked someone took a knife and stabbed a little whole on the back of it. Took it back to the pawn shop and he said I did it, Hope this guy doesnt try to do something similar to you.
 
I heard that toothpaste removes some of the scratches off of CDs. There's a video on youtube about it, and my brother tried it once, but I'm not sure if it worked or not. <_<

May be worth giving a try if nothing else works.

You take some toothpaste and rub it all over the back of the disc, then you wait, and let it dry for a few minutes. Then you wash it off.
 
IF repairing the disc doesn't work, don't jump to roms just yet. There is always the possibilty of your SYSTEM being the problem. I'm not sure on the chances of it, but theres always teh chance. Keep this in mind.

Also, 1 gig of mem isn't bad. I've downloaded discographyies that are 2-3 gigs worth, and they normally take 2 hrs or so. Might just be my compy though. Not entirely sure.

Know this may sound weird but had the same problem ..

Can't remember what we did because it was 11 years ago.. xD

But think we went into a Gamestore and they cleaned the discs for us..

Maybe just hop into a random Gamestore and see if they can help you..

I'm not sure about the toothpaste thing... and the disc repair failed so it doesn't sound likely that this will work. I tried emulating the game as well, it crashes at the same spot even when I emulate it, but it skips instead of crashes.
 
Well, that's unfortunate.

My PS2 is pretty old and in bad shape... has the same problem with A LOT of the cutscenes. It will usually freeze on the waves in the beginning and just flat out brick on the Sorceress' Parade CGI Sequence.

However, running the disc in my PC cleared up any issues I'd had with it. :\

But ya man, with all the emulation software for PSX that is up and running working pretty well with a little bit of tinkering, I don't think I'd spend my money on PSX games man.

One of my friends Telmaen (or Nephry) told me (when I was having issues with playing KHI on my PS2) that if you have a fat PS2, the problem might just be your PS2... May need to be cleaned.
 
I have a silver slim PS2... so... are you saying the game has issues with the PS2 in general? My PS2 is only about a year and a half old...
 
Final Fantasy VIII should work fine on a PS2. I played my copy on the black slim ps2 without a hitch. Now i have a question for you. Are there any Gamestop stores where you are at? If so get their disc scratch fixer. it works wonders. My old copy of Spyro the dragon was so scratched up that the sound quit working completely and the game skipped a lot. i used some of the Gamestop disc fixer and now the game plays like new. if there isn't a gamestop near you try your game stores and see if they have a disc scratch liquid stuff.
 
It sounds like there's nothing you can do. If I were you and nothing seemed to work I'd have returned the game (if possible), have you asked for a refund?

I don't like buying used games, there's a high chance of them not working... But I know it's like the only way of getting older games.

No, any PSX FF game should work just fine on a PS2. There's no compatability problems here. I've played VII and IX perfectly fine on the console.

I have a question for you, has it froze in that same spot every time?

I just wonder because in some cases like this, it can (somehow) end up that it's the only part that'll act up like that. In which case, sometimes tilting or moving your PS2 at the time allows the "scanner" to apparently pick the game's data back up.

I know it sounds stupid, but there've been a point or two like that in a few of my games that I've gotten past by doing that, and then the rest of the game ended up fine. It happened in VII at one point, and when I messed with the PS2 a bit, it skipped the FMV, but the rest of the game was smooth sailing.

If you haven't done it already, it's worth a shot.

Ok... another list:

1. It stops at the same spot each time, Seifer taking a slash at Squall, then it freezes for like 15 seconds, plays a bit, then it stops like a second later when Rinoa is shown on the screen.

2. I tried rotating my PS2 already, I put it sideways, right facing down, then left facing down, then I put it upside down... nothing.

3. Brought it to Blockbuster and had them run it through their machine thing, nothing... but it DID fix the big scratches... but who knows if that actually worked. It still crashes at that same spot.

4. I'm seeing if the guy will give me a working copy of Disc 1, but after I looked at disc 2, I'm thinking it might be worth giving the whole thing back to him.

5. What confuses me, I have FF7... and it's scratched like f*ck... but it never showed any sign of errors or crashing. It looks like I took the discs, and clawed at them with my fingernails for a few minutes straight. But I'm playing it and I'm already on Disc 2, and it works clean as it should... WTF?! Is this copy of FF8 like...modded to crash or something? xD
