Who else is looking forward to this movie? It's based on the book "Golden Compass" which is called "The Northern Lights" in the UK, and other places except the US and Canada (i think)

It should be interesting to see how much they edit it, since the book has a lot of anti-religious content - such as the overthrowing of the Angels ruling heaven, and an organisation dedicated to setting up "The Republic Of Heaven"

That, and the armoured polar bears look amazing :D

Read the book and it was good but like all movies they cut out the good parts and make it just plain cheesy

I'll see it to see how it compares with the book, but I'm not expecting anything outstanding. They've already changed Iofur Raknison's name to something else (can't remember what) so as to avoid confusion with Iorek Byrnison, but you have to be pretty fucking stupid to mix them up imo.
And I'm not sure about casting Daniel Craig as Lord Thingamajiggy. He's a great actor, but this isn't a role for him.

I like the title 'The Northern Lights' better :(

=o...........I must read this book and see the movie now xDD

I have no idea why is called Golden Compass...why change the name for the States and Canada only..? I simply cannot understand a stupid thing like that...

Anyway, seen the trailers, and I am looking foward, but some things already that I have seen in the trailers did not add up to what was in the book, and so...we shall see....looks great, but just cos it is looking good does not mean it is gonna be good.

Because to the damn Yanks, "Golden Compass" makes more sense. They could at least have called it "The Alethiometer" since that's what it's referring to. If they don't call it that in the film because of America, I'll scream.

I prefer The Northern Lights title. IMO it sounds much better. Golden Compass sounds childish in a way. Americans have to edit everything, look at Harry Potter & The Philopsers (sp) Stone. I was even told that parts of the first HP book were edited as they didnt know what certain things were ...

Anyway! I will be going to see the film as I love the book and I cant wait to see peoples dæmons. Ive always loved that idea and tried to use it in myown novels.

It really doesn't matter what the title of the film is anyway. The quality of the film is going to have nothing to do with that in the end. I don't get why people get so annoyed about it anyway, it's not like they took the contents and edited it into oblivion. It's just a title people.

Of course if they dumb down the contents of the book in the film, that will be really annoying.

Its frustrating as its being altered for an American audience. Philip Pullman is British and they should stick to the authors true origin IMO. I dont see why Northen Lights is a less cool title as Golden Compass. Northen Lights gives it a mysterious feel, whislt IMO Golden Compass is chidlish almost.
