"Get a Life" - William Shatner

Joss Whedon had a comment on this but I cannot find it at the moment however the basis of this thread is this: I realize that everyone has a life out of the forums, games and anime but I do not believe that a large majority of us are stereotypical nerds who don't have girlfriends or a jobs. I don't why but it seems to offend (I shouldn't let myself be offended by anything) me because I enjoy things like anime and video games and I want to share myt hobbies with someone but I am not some who lacks any life whatsoever yet alone living. I cannot really think thoroughly about this quote enough to comment on it but what is basically your response to this?

By the way if anyone can find Whedon's answer to Shatner, I would appreciate it!

Its just a complete stereotype that all people who like final fantasy are ' geeks '
If any of these people who make such claims were to actually speak to members on this forum i think they would get a shock.
Stereotypes are just stupid you cant give an accurate portrayal of someone by knowing 1 thing about them.
I love final fantasy but its not ' my life ' I work full time, am looking at getting my own flat soon, a girlfriend who's ok, and good mates.
Myself i would take offense if someone called me a nerd because i liked final fantasy, but at the same time i know the person saying it has never played or knows anything about the series itself. thats it

Well, I have no girl/boyfriend and no job. Of course, the latter is only temporary, but the former I have no desire to change. I do know that others like to label such people as nerds or people who "have no life"; the former, I have grown accustomed to because being a nerd isn't a bad thing; the term is just used by people ignorant of what a nerd actually implies. The latter, I have told to other people because I don't think it's a bad thing either; it just means I'm more keen on something that other people wouldn't be--whether or not it is practical is irrelevant. Some people say math (which is apparently why I have no life) is useless, but it isn't.

I have told other people that I "have no life" because I spend time on things which require mathematical thinking, or fully acknowledge it, and don't socialize all that much, but they say it is not that I have no life, but that my life is math, and all the things I spend my time on.

What, pray tell, does it mean for someone to "have no life"?

And some of us prefer a life that doesn't involve going out or socializing with people as much. I have to wonder if it's just because people are jealous that we have something to keep us from being bored or are talented or interested enough to delve deeply into subjects like math, or other things that other people have difficulty being keen on.

The majority of members here are probably as you say. Not that nerd or geek is a representative term for the whole of them... but most people here consider this place to be a home, a place where they are accepted. A lot of people will say they love it "here", as if this were an actual place. They consider the members of these boards to be friends or enemies... and their disputes or agreements with them to actually mean something. They expect their "accomplishment" on these boards to be worth something. And typically they see the members here as an extended family, which was even an argument used against me once long ago. I believe it was Mitsuki that headed that foo-foo bullshit concept.

Then there are those of us who are just "here" to post and have fun. It's not a home for us or someplace we adore... it's just a temporary distraction from our lives. Where our lives are the main focus of what we are... and every once in awhile we need to relax, talk to the world (regardless if it listens) and just post about whatever comes to mind. To us, these boards isn't a place for friends and an "extended family"... it's just a fun de-stresser.

Well, there probably are a few people here who do treat this place with a bit more importance than you say they do, besides the people that are staff here (who treat this place with a different kind of importance than the one we're speaking of here), but the point is that you can't label all people who are nerds or geeks, or people with "no lives" as the same people who believe the forums is all they have in life--or that anyone on this forum at all must have this same view. To be fair, we all spend lots of time doing all kinds of things that might not seem important from outside people--it's the reason why we say we're busy. Forum browsing might just be one of those things.

But I suspect people treat the forums seriously or take things personally on occasion because of things that happen on it. I know in general that most people shouldn't care, but for reasons I don't understand, people have feelings and can get hurt--it can happen anywhere.

I can, for example, draw art and post them. It's just a hobby, and I do it for fun, as do several other people, so whether or not I get comments from other people doesn't really matter, but there are still some people who can give nasty comments that cause the artist to feel annoyed or maybe treat that comment a bit more seriously than they should have. I don't think that they should feel that way, but then anyone who doesn't get at least a little annoyed is probably the kind of person who has "no life".

Haha, I guess I answered my own question.
