Somnus Nemuri

That's the name of the first track to be released in full for the FFXIII series as a bonus track from Yoko Shimomura's Best Works Compilation CD released two weeks ago. A rip has been hard to get a hold of until now so I rapidshared it for all interested

Listen to it and post back here on thoughts about the track and the seeming direction of the OST. I know one track isn't the complete picture, but it's part of it.

I've got the Drammatica CD on my computer and it is amazing, 'Somnus' is probably the best track on it closely followed by 'Legend of Mana Title Theme'. I think this version of Somnus is better than the one on the trailer because it gets rid of all the annoying gunss etc, and think "wow" thats a great piece of music.
Definitely worth a listen, and thanks for the link.

I got the same feelings when I was watching the trailers for FF vs XIII a while ago, since it is essentially the same theme.

But anyways...

It does give a powerful swell of emotions. The way the woman (I'm making the safe assumption it IS a woman) is singing the song sounds almost like a hymn.

Maybe singing about the past struggles with what we can assume is the kingdom that the featured male lead of this game rules over.

The parts where the piano is playing remind of a lot of the Kingdom Hearts themes, and KH had a very deep storyline with quite a few mature themes despite the juvenile age rating.

But I like it when more orchestra-like music is in video games. I can't help but feel more emotion behind music when those type of instruments are being played.

I like it. Orchestral music does have alot of depth and stronger emotion than other types, yes, and I would like some in XIII, but not in the style of XII, more a mix of metal, techno, and classical. It was wholly orchestral/classical music in XII, which isn't always good for certain things. They should think more about mixing it up. That's what made XII's soundtrack one of the weakest, if not THE weakest in Final Fantasy. it focused on one type of music, without using others. Grandiose all the time, nothing that really inspired fear or sorrow. XII's soundtrack wasn't very emotional or scene setting compared to other FFs. So I hope Square Enix bears that in mind. Not just one type of music, lots of different types of music, whichever is the most appropriate. Because in XII it all seemed very grandiose, and there was no fear, shock, sorrow, hardly anything except glory and triumph, it seemed. [/rant

For the first track though, it sounds very good, and I hope it stays that way. =)
