What are the items to upgrade the weapons for each character, and also where is the best place to get them?

You defeat enemies and they drop certain items that can be used via Save points to upgrade your weapon and accessories. As for the best places, well depends on what items youre after really.

in chapter 11.. you'll get to free roam around archlyte steppe.. there you'll find lots and lots of monsters to fight.. you'll also find cieth stones or something like that.. and doing missions for these fallen l'cies will reward you items that you can use to upgrade weapons...

Another good way to upgrade weapons is to buy 50 enigmatic fluid from the shop Creature Comforts (4000 Gil). Using all of these one the same weapon will give you a 3 x XP multiplier. Then you can use whatever gives the most xp that you have on the weapon, and recieve triple what you normally would.
For example superconducters would normally give 400xp for a cost of 840 gil each, but with this "trick" you can get 1200xp per each conducter for the same amount of cash.
Once the weapons have a little * next to them they can be upgraded into a new weapon using one of the "transforamtional catalysts" which can be found after fights or bought from
. This basically remove the level cap on the weapon you currently have and allow you to upgrade the weapon even further.

36 Sturdy Bones from Creature Comforts will also get you to the x3 multiplier. Creature components have a positive multiplier, where mechanical components have a negative. The positive increases the multiplier on the item where the negative decreases it. The most effective way to increase your items is to get the weapon/accessory bonus to x3, then use the largest xp amount of mechanical component at once.
Weapons also work in stages:
Stage 1 -> Stage 2 > Ultimate
Stage 1 has 26 levels, Stage 2 has 61, Ultimate has 100.
For example, Lightning's Blazefire:
Blazefire -> Flameberge -> Omega Weapon
Each -> requires a catalyst to change. They will also be stored in the components section. They tend to end in -ite, but don't always. The icon looks like a rock or a blob. You can't use these on any weapons that cannot use it as a catalyst to move on. Items must be at maximum (star) level to use a catalyst.
The new weapon will seem weaker at first, but you can upgrade it further to become stronger, as Lightning said.
