Hi guys. I will get right to it; I hated final fantasy 12(thats the one with the idiotic battle system right? the non-online one). Anyway, I couldn't find anything online that stated the battle system is over-hauled, and I want a person who has actually played the game to tell me straight out.

1) Is the battle system actually good? The reason stopped playing 12 was because of the crappy combat system, I could not get used to it. So is the battle system more reminiscent of final fantasy 8/9/10? If it is anything like 12 then I can not pick this game up.

2) How long is this game? I love getting my moneys worth, so about how many hours is it? Assuming some one has finished it.

I often do research before spending money on a video game, and since the last final fantasy was a complete pile of rhino shit, I can not trust the developer anymore. Thanks for your input.

The battle system is alright. It's not too bad, you'll pick it up. I'm still getting used to Paradigm Shift and the Crystarium, but it is a good fight system.

The game is long, I won't give too much away, but there are six hours worth of cut-scenes. So you can imagine how long the game will be. There are thirteen chapters, and after 18 hours, I was on chapter nine. Which I thought was quick, but it is a long game.

The battle system is different to FF12. You should have no issues with it.

I've now completed the game, it took me a little over 40 hours to do so. That was without doing any of the side quests or attempting to unlock all the trophies on the PS3 version, so probably 100+ hours of gameplay?

I've played on the game for about 10 hours - i've actually been playing it for 19 hours, for some reason I thought 10 :s haha, and I'm on chapter 7 (out of 13 chapters) already, so it's quite long.

And the battle system isn't really similar to 8, 9 or 10. It's kind of similar to XII's battle system, but its quite different at the same time, I'm not sure what you'd make of it, I myself adore this new battle system, even though my favourite is FFX's battle system. This battle system is very similar to Final Fantasy X-2's battle system.

Random battles on an area map no longer occur as in 8, 9 and 10. Much like in 12 you can see the enemy on the map, however in order to initiate combat you actually have to make contact with the enemy, then you're tranported to a seperate area (much like previous installments) where the battle takes place.

You'll find that the battle system is really quite similar to 12's, lacking the slow paced type of the aforementioned in order to deliver more of a realistic feel to the pacing of the battle. The battle system is one of few saving graces of this game, but preference is preference eh?

Sadly, the type you and I both love is too retro for today's gamer.

Assuming you're a seasoned FF player, 35-45 hours. You'll find the game is an incredibly linear experience up until about 25-30 hours in.

The kind of game we were weaned on to doesn't really have a home at Square Enix anymore. The player is funneled through the game's thin, meandering maps at break neck speed and the story is nothing to shout about.

Nor is the character design.

Towns and Cities have no place in XIII, unless of course you include brief cameos of fighting in back alleys and the occasional cutscene, which amount to nothing more than a skin change from a cave environment to an urban one in terms of gameplay options. In fact, you'll have to bludgeon your way through 10 Chapters and countless taxing battles to finally be able to change your party.

You had more options after Midgar on 7 :ffs:

Don't get me wrong though. The visuals are absolutely incredible and the environments are quite an eyeful.

Shame you don't care enough about them...

Hmmm, thanks for all the responses (kinda surprised no one flamed me).

I still have some trepidation on buying this game; can it be said the battle system is kinda like the tales of vesperia and the old school turn based battles combined?

I do tend to get hooked on stories in the game, and I am hoping that there is character depth, can I expect story up to par with mass effect?

Overall consensus says that the game is long, which is good, however, my only fret is with the battle system. Some of you say that the battle system is like 12 (which scares the shit out of me) while others say I will have no problem with it.

Anyways, I'll do some more research and make a decision, thanks for helping me, I can be quite annoying when it comes to purchasing games.

If you cats think of anything else that can help don't be shy.

Thank yall kindly

I'd recommend the game to you, if your unsure about the battle system check youtube for an example of a battle. I- personally think the battle system is very similar to FFX-2's battle system, only the dress spheres are called "paradigms", if you liked how FFX levelled up with the spere grid you'll enjoy the "Crystarlum" method of levelling up, it's very similar.

The story is great and very enjoyable so far, but very different in my eyes of a normal Final Fantasy story.

if you're really worried, wait a few weeks until the game can be bought at gamestop used. Game stop allows you to return used games if you don't like them. As long as you return it within a week.

First mass affect that a joke.
Mass affect is a quick scifi story that was toss together.
That game is mainly about the battle with some story to keep you liking it.
Know don't get me wrong it a good game however.
In story it way below ff games.
ff13 have a great story line i cried within 20min of starting the game.
Okay well every character have 6 jobs and you can switch between jobs within battle. it have some aspect of the old battle system however they speed it up and made it kinder like 10-2 battle system. You notice your hp dropping very fast within it. unlike others enemy does a ton more damage then they did in other ff games. However they have a auto setting so the game pick your moves for you if you start to get to fast for you and you need to be able to think for a min. Are if you just grinding the auto is good to since it allows you to finish battle faster.
The summon system i love in this game.
best summon system every.

Well it a wonderful game i am on chapter 12 and been playing for 58hr.
