Help FFXIII: How long do I have to use Hope?

Just got onto the worldmap, and now Im stuck with controlling Hope? How long will this last?

Also, is it possible to beat those huge elephants at all at this level?

untill you get to the archylte steppe on gran pulse
then you can pick whom you want to use unless for story mode reasons ect...and I beat the adamanchelid,when I first arrived, but not the others you just have to use your skills for that...or build up a bit.....

U actually shouldn't hate on Hope lol. he is a better Healer and has Higher magic then Vanielle. and also seeing how he can fully buff and heal your party...unlike Vanielle....well Hope is a tad more useful lol.
