I proceeded along in Orphan's Cradle after doing very little grinding in Pulse and Edenhall (through portals). And I got past the part where I defeat the Jabberwocky and whats-his-name (the 2 beasts in the temple area you teleport to). But so far, I see no way to go back. Is there a way to go back and forth, further into the Cradle? Sazh pointed out that if we want to run, now's the time (when I first entered the cradle and saw the portals)

There is a way you just have to keep playing. But to be honest there isn't a point of no return in Orphan's cradle. Once you fight through it and win battles and such you'll be given an opportunity to go back and grind on pulse and in the city you were just at. You'll see, just play. Hope that helped 
Actually THERE is a point of No Return on Orphan's Cradle if by that you mean you can not return. After you beat the game you cant go through the whole cradle. It is just minimized and you only have an option of fighting Sacrifices or Just the final boss by going through the Narthex. There is no way to put the Cradle back to normal. Once you beat Tiamat Eliminator it just has the option of going to the final boss or back to Pulse or Eden I believe. But once you beat the game THERE is no way of fightning through the Cradle again but yes you can return to Pulse and Eden.
