Does anyone know if they are going to make FFXI available for the PS3? And if so will you be able to use your current character that you have from the PS2?

I believe they said that it would not be released for the PlayStation 3 because of the way the system was built and run. They said that their servers would not be compatible. However, if this information is not valid, all systems play together and any account can be played on any system. All you need is the login information.

I heard that PS3 would be a totally diffrent system so you gotta some more time for FFXI news on PS3.

From what Square Enix released in an interview awhile back, they mentioned that the software on their end would not cooperate with the hardware and software built into the PlayStation 3. Square Enix would not re-create the system for a single console; they've said that as well.

That would be the reason that Square Enix is not going to release Final Fantasy XI on the PlayStation 3. It's not going to be compatible with the PlayStation 3 hardware. Square Enix would have to completely rewrite their software to make it work.

Remember that PS3 has backward compatibility (i hope) so it should work some way or another, we gotta try it first.

It's got nothing to do with backwards compatibilitity. Final Fantasy XI requires that you install it on a darhdrive in order to play. After installing it on the harddrive, you no longer need the CD to play. That being said, it doesn't matter if the PlayStation 3 allows backwards compatibility, because now it's entirely up to the harddrive and hardware insdie the PlayStation 3. Square Enix said that the harddrive being used by the PlayStation 3 will not be compatible with Square Enix's server-side software.

dosent that mean that you could use your old hard drive that you used for playing FFXI on PS2?

Well you can always play your character, if you play the PS2 version or the PC cause your Content I.D is always the same.. so even if PS3 has a FFXI then it will let ya play your character on it, cause all your doin is just downloading the game your character exsists in the server untill you delete him/her

I know that your character is tored online but the PS2 version of the game is on a hard drive and PS3 has backwards compatibility so it should be able to play FFXI.

You're not understanding what I'm saying. First of all, we're talking about the software that Final Fantasy XI puts onto your harddrive. That has been specifically designed, not just for the PlayStation 2, but all systems FFXI currently works for, to work in a specified way. If it can't work that way, it can't work. Final Fantasy XI does not use a CD to play. It runs the application directly off the harddrive. The PlayStation 3 does not use the same hardware. Aside from hardware, the operating system inside the PlayStation 3 runs entirely different from the PlayStation 2. They basically crossed a PC and a PlayStation 2 to create a completely new console.

This has absolutely nothing to do with being backwards compatible or not. We're not talking about just a PlayStation 3 anymore. We're talking about a PlayStation 3, the internet, and the Final Fantasy XI servers. Everything must work together, or it can't work. As stated by Square Enix, it's not able to work together.

This situation is similar to that of Phantasy Star Universe. If you're familiar with this game at all, you'd know that they have two types of servers. They have a set of servers for the Xbox, and a set of servers for PC and PlayStation. For the exact same reasons as stated for Final Fantasy XI, they had to make a different type of server because the systems did not communicate with the server the same way. In Square Enix's case, they don't want two different types of servers; they want one and only one.

There was also a press release where Square Enix announced that it would not be released for another Sony platform again because the support and cooperation from Sony was horrible. This alone will be enough reason for Square Enix to not release it for the PlayStation 3.

I saw a post on some fourm that you could download from sony on the ps3's menu not sure if that is true or not
