Hey all! First post on these forums.
My primary intention for registering here was to get opinions on the idea of a Source Engine remake of FFVIII. It pains me to see how much attention and spin-offs VII gets, when mine and many other people's favourite FF game is easily VIII!
Since Source Engine is supposedly easiest to attempt something like this in, that's what I'm going for. CryEngine 2 would be nice though =P

What do you guys think?

Remake VIII ?

VIII's graphics still look amazing after all these years, and the script isn't outdated yet.

Why try and change it ?

Understand that FF VII gets all the sequels but pretty sure VIII will get something.
( one day xd )

I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say FFVIII’s graphics look amazing. For all its greatness FFVIII’s is a little long-in-the-tooth. The CGI sequences are undeniably brilliant but in comparison to modern day games the rest of the game is graphically horrendous. As long as the script and music were left completely untouched I would welcome a remake of the game with open arms.

Hmm i'd like UE3 more but either way i like the idea but it would never happen :(

UE3 would be very nice. Obviously wouldn't go so far as to change the script or core game at all, just the graphics. And make the CGs real-time, since UE3/CryEngine/etc are capable of looking even better than those.
In my opinion, if Square were to re-release 7/8/9 either together or separately, as pure graphical updates, on 360 and PS3 - they'd make some very easy money.

Edit: Oh, and yeah, FFVIII does hold up well for it's age. But think of all the extra emotion and impact a next-gen engine could give all those pivotal scenes! =]

Too much risk and too little to gain...

A spin off to FF:VIII would be great... I'd love to see Squall in action again.

But not too sure of the Source Engine remake, though. The pre-rendered sequences of the game looks good even for these days graphics, and all of it is executed with such artistic brilliance. You can really see creativity brimming in those sequences (like for example the Lunar Cry... woah).

But its not the graphics that attracted me. Lets face it - compared to other modern games, the graphics truly is horrendous. What made me fall in love with FF8 is the story, the way it unwinds, and the way it twists and turns. It remains to this day the game I consider the most indulging I've ever played.

So as long as they keep the music, the script (.... and I mean everything line-by-line, even the dialogues), and the overall feel of the game the same, a remake would be welcome. But I doubt if they'll be able pull it off that way.

FF8 with Crysis graphics would be great - then I tell those guys who refuse to play FF8 due to "crappy graphics" Wonder what Squall would sound like.. lolz.... :P

I don't believe VIII's graphics are any better than VII. Yes, they aren't bad for THEIR time. This isn't their time anymore though, this is a new era. An era where games just don't look like that. Back then those games were nearly just blurs on the screen. Now you have the facial expressions, the exact movements, everything that just makes the graphics of games great. I would love to see a remake of FFVII, VIII, and IX. I would buy any of them. However, they would have to keep everything the same. The music, the storyling, the gameplay, everything. The only thing I would want changed would be the graphics. Just my thoughts, but I am all for a remake. :)
