They're just like bookmarking tools for different sites I'm sure.

Like Digg for example. It's just for when people are searching the internet and come across one of our posts that may cover a game review or something. Someone may think it's really well written and decide to share it with the people registered at Digg.

I've never used these sites but I'm guessing that's what those buttons are used for. >_<

Clicking a Digg button adds your vote. Register with Digg to promote and share the best content on the web, like from www.finalfantasyforums.net:

Someone else will probably be more informative.

I think that they were originally intended to boost site activity by flashing our "good posts" to these sites, where Darkblade would basically get more money for having a more popular site. It's like repping a post to represent the site elsewhere.

I can't imagine they're used often, if at all, and have simply never been removed.

Well would it help site activity and popularity if we did use them? Good reviews, great posts, etc.? I'd be alright with putting high quality content in front of people's noses if it helped us get more quality posters that used these programs. That actually sounds incredibly beneficial. Plus, I wouldn't mind "publishing" some of my better shit to a bigger audience (like my Fallout 3 review) >.>

That's only possible provided that 1) I remember correctly and 2) that a decent number of members are willing to sign up to these sites and invest a great deal of time putting in the effort. By all means, go for it, but it's not really something we can impose on people. I don't know if you want to link to these sites in your signature, or something, to bring them to others' attention.

I don't know what the last 3 symbols are for (though I presume they all do the same thing) but I know the Digg at least is to promote posts because I remember when I was searching for SE News when I was on staff that I stumbled across a post from SEF via google after someone had used Digg on it, so it definitely promotes posts. Whether or not people register on those sites to post themselves is another matter entirely.
But I would be more than willing to follow in Aztec's footsteps and use them if it benefits the forums. :)
