alright, i tried searching on here and came up with nothing but a google search turned up some info on other forums im not a part of. i still couldnt find what i wanted though. Im posting this for my brother, he's trying to play teh pc version of ff7 on his toshiba laptop and obviously the pc version's default control use the number pad....that most laptops dont have. i have a wireless number pad for laptops so i brought it over and the directional keys work but enter still doesnt. can anybody help a loyal ff7 fan? thank you for any help

First, Make sure you install the software that came with the gamepad BEFORE you plug it in. Driver conflicts because of this cause many problems. Also, make sure your keys are set right.

If you have a XBOX 360 wired controller, you can download some software from microsoft's website so you can plug it into your USB port and use it as the controller.

Otheriwse, What is the gamepad and what kind is it and what version of FF7 is he trying to run AND IS IT A LEGAL COPY.

i agree with tiel, if the pad came with a CD, install it... however if not, search for the driver online... i won't kill you for being a little pirate, because i would be a hypocrite then, since I pirated the game :3
good luck, though...

the game is a legal copy and works fine on my desktop. teh pad isnt a game pad, its a number pad. it came with no software and i'm pretty sure it doesnt need it. it works on my wife's laptop, all u need to do is plug in the usb piece and it works. it even says thats all u need to do in the directions for it. the xbox controller sounds like a good idea. anybody have anymore details on the software needed for xbox controller?

can you manually change the buttons in the game? Maybe you should make 'Enter' be a different key on the keyboard, e.g 'E'

well thats the plan. but to do that you need to be in the game. right now he cant get passed the blue screen that says "new game" and "continue" he can move up and down but he cant hit enter to select "new game" and get to the menu to change the controls

try holding: SHIFT + Enter

or use space bar, or instead of the 'Return' (enter) key, use the enter key by the number pad.

i'm sure you've probably tried this, but it's highly unlikely there isn't a button that works like the Enter key.

even try A,B etc

So... the return key doesn't work?
nope. when u first start the pc version the default keys are all on the number pad (which the laptop doesnt have) he woudl very much like to change the controls but u need to get in the game to do that which u cant do without using the default keys til you can access the in game menu. we've tried every single button on the laptop and the wireless number pad

I'm fairly sure that when I had FFVII on my old laptop, I had to download some patch to make it laptop friendly.

Otherwise, I have no clue.

for the xbox 360 controller setup, go here
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/download.mspx

Just put in the right information ( make sure to pick the controller category ) and it will give you a downlaod, install it and plug in your controller and it's good to go. You can set it up in the options section, you may have to change the input device to gamepad in the options menu of the game, but i'm not sure, never played it for pc :S

Also, on laptops, the right side of the keyboard usually has a second set of digits or numbers under the actual keys, make sure the NUM LOCK light is off ( it looks like [1] ).

i appreciate everyones help

alright one more quick question- i installed the patch and got everything to work properly with one exception. my brother played through the first fight and got to the point where cloud is asked his name and you have a chance to name cloud. on that screen you cant use the laptop patch controls to hit enter on that naming screen. does anybody have a solution to this?

That's simple, you just press enter on the keyboard xD
nope wrong. for character naming the controls go back to default despite the laptop patch. i did however discover that if you hold in the fn button and use the enter key as well as teh secondary directional arrows under the letters
