If you're a fan of Dawn of War, Starcraft, etc... you know what an RTS is and you know what they're about. The basic premise is you get a base, gather resources, build some units, expand your base, upgrade your base, upgrade your units, and kick your enemy's ass. The key to these games is that each faction not only has several general strengths and weakness, but also that each unit within has certain strengths and weaknesses against specific enemy units (in a very rock, paper, scissor-esque style).

My thought is that Square-Enix could probably make a pretty deep RTS game solely using the classes they've developed throughout the main series. It doesn't necessarily have to be split in any sort of clean-cut way (like magic users against physical attackers). The best part of this idea is, as Dawn of War experts may know, is that DoW has already included a pretty serious leveling system to their gameplay which Square-Enix could build off of.

Black mages could naturally use whichever spell was tactically the most effective in battle. Maybe they'd only naturally use the correct spell if there was someone in their party who knew the ability "scan"; if not, the player would have to manually select it. Suppose summoners existed in a faction opposing black mages. A summoner would level and naturally call their most powerful beast into battle. If the summoner called Shiva, the black mage would naturally use Fire, Fira, or Firaga against it based on the highest level elemental magic it had learned.

There are endless possibilties. I not only want to hear your thoughts on the subject, but also think of ways that it could work. I think there could be a lot of depth and realism to a game like this. Call me out if you think otherwise.

Good idea. If I'm not mistaken (I have not played the game) Revenant Wings is a sort of RTS is it not. Square has done some minimalist RTS attempts, for example with the Fort Condor side game in VII. I don't think that any RTS has the ability to be a stand alone numbered title -- there just does not seem to be enough in the way of story and character development. I do however think that it could be a great spin off idea -- managing SeeD vs. the sorceresses in an VIII spin-off or Shinra v. Wutai in a VII spinoff.

Wow, this does sound like a good idea, dont know how many factions they could put in though, if there werent a lot of factions it seems like the game would be kind of short, like Halo wars (where there is only two sides)

Well the more I think about it, the more I come up with a half-decent reason to describe the split. It doesn't necessarily have to be all the summoners of the land go "fuck you, I'mma gonna go to Team A" while everyone else heads to Team B. It can be that the world came across teachings of ancient magic and it different, already established factions, were able to secure different ones. Say there were three warring factions for reason X on plants X,Y, and Z... and they came across the ability to use white magic and it just so happens Faction A walked away with it. Now faction A could summon while the rest could not.

You could give the story a lot of plot and depth and make it seem very random and spontaneous who got which "job classes"... but in reality it would be very structured and mapped out very clearly. It would also allow each factions basic unit to be a person. And by doing this, you could not only create a RTS but also give it a very "Lionshead Black & White" feel.

Imagine instead of having a town center that you clicked on to generate people, you actually had a living breathing town with citizens... some of whom you could recruit into various academies to teach them the ways of the samurai, black mage, theif, monk, or time mage. You could naturally select the percentage of citizens you wanted in each class... and they would train themselves... or you could manually recruit them. And if they weren't working, they'd be gathering resources. It would give it a much more wholesome and Final Fantasy feel.

that sounds like a great idea and it would be cool to feature so ff character like cloud and ssephiroth as generals and such along with covering the whole FF universe :D

I think a game like this would do better with out direct characters from other games, I think references would be okay like having a town or a character named sephiroth, but not be the sephiroth we know from FFVII, I just think it would make for a too convoluted story. I think new characters would be best for this game with their own story and personalities.

My visceral reaction is to agree with you. However, Square-Enix has done well recently in incorporating desperate characters into a cohesive and compelling story, for example on the Kingdom Hearts series and in Dissidia. I thing that something similar would work for the RTS game: Have this be a sort of Armageddon, or Ragnarok, when the barriers deviding universes begin to break down, and a climactic clash of forces results

As tempting as that would probably be, I'd have to vote against it. I'd like to see this as an original IP that did fan-service in a very general sense without ever being too specific.

I considered the concept of famous FF people being in the game like heroes were in Warcraft 3... but I'm pretty set against it. I think RTS's are better off being purely about the strategy without having power players. Everything needs to have a counter and weakness or it becomes just about spamming one unit or action...

I hate RTS (they are boring to me) but Final Fantasy RTS would be interesting! Nice idea!

[Mod Edit: why do you think this? A bit more effort, please. Thanks.]
