My favorite FFVI party is:
Celes - Amazing magic user and fighter
Locke - fast speed and good stats + relationship with Celes
Terra - Same as Celes
Mog - just because moogles rock

My favorite party is Celes, Locke, Mog, and Gau
Celes is just really cool, one of the main magey characters, and still gets to sword stuff, she has some of the most character development in the game, and though it's totally brokenly cheap, give her illumina, and full force armor, and she becomes an immortal killing machine =P
Locke is also one of the most developed characters, he's attitude as a 'treasure hunter' is priceless, and his backstory is great. He's well balanced and gets cool weapons, and there's nothing more fun than giving him the x-power and thief glove and watching him mug four times!
Mog because he's awesome, yes. Always gonna have a soft spot for dancing moogles, when I first played the game I was like 6, and the scene in the beginning where he helps you out cemented him into my party forever.
Gau seems like a bit of an odd choice, never knew anyone who liked him as much as me (was my favorite for years and years). The clearest reason is that when you meet him on the velt, and conversations you have with him later, are some of the funniest and most entertaining parts of the game. On top of that, Rage was a really interesting abilities, and I liked teaching him tons of monsters. That's all secondary though to the true reason. You see, when I was a little kid I watched my brother playing FFVI for maybe the first time, and he was on top of the ghost train, and the first thing I saw was gau (raging) step up and cast 'blaze' the line of blue fire abilities bombs get, and that was the coolest thing ever. In fact, when I first played and got Gau, I renamed him Blaze! =P
In terms of power though, Terra can replace Celes for Terra fans. Relm is the most powerful magic user in the game. Sabin rules, if only because he's a street fighter character in an RPG (Hadoken!). Edgar's tools can be exceedingly useful, and lastly, Gogo is the trump card, since you can give him which three abilities are your favorite, and he knows every spell that the rest of the party does.

Locke, Edgar, Sabin, and Cyan for my main 4 big hitters. They are my strongest and best leveled characters and the one's I have the most abilities learned with. Celes and Shadow are also up there, but those previous 4 are way up there compared the rest.
Hmm... I always use Terra, Edgar, Sabin, and Cyan. They're always my strongest characters. I like making Edgar a dragoon. XD

I always like to use Sabin, Edgar, and Terra. I hardly ever have 4 in my party unless I really have to, but usually I'm just carrying 3 with me. I do put locke in my team if I really need him to steal from a boss or some enemies, but thats mainly it
